Another grain silo photo and honey possums

Grain silos at Ravensthorpe, Western Australia

As so many quite liked the painted grain silos in my recent post, here is a photo of the other side of the bins. These are in Ravensthorpe, Western Australia. On the bin on the right you can see the little honey possum. I can’t find any images of the honey possum so I’ll describe it here. As you can see it has a long, pointed snout. It lives entirely on nectar and pollen and there are not many mammals that do this. The tongue is long with a brush tip, much like that of a honeyeater or hummingbird. A continual supply of blossom is important for the honey possum as, unlike birds, it cannot travel long distances in search of food supplies. It can climb trees easily as well as traversing the undergrowth at speed. The very long tail is prehensile and can be used to grip branches and twigs. They live between one and two years and are not considered endangered. The vegetation shown is of banksia blossoms compared to the hard seed-cases which were shown in the photo in the previous discussion.
Another interesting site when we visited Ravensthorpe in Western Australia was their giant wheat-bins (grain silos) which have been painted to show the banksia...

Those little creatures are so cute, and I never heard of them before you wrote about them in a different post.

The body length is 6.5 to 9 cm (2.6 to 3.5 in) and the tail is a little more than the length of the body. They weigh half as much as a mouse so they are very tiny.

Are you saying you didn't realise these are such big silos? I don't know how much grain they hold but it would be a lot.

I like this side better than the other side really. Overall, it's supposed to show the life cycle of the banksia from flower to seed-case.

He looks like a long tailed rat. It's interesting it only lives on nectar and pollen. Beautiful silos.

Wikipedia says he is only half the weight of a mouse so he must be very tiny - and his tail is longer than his body length.

Vince takes his photos in something called 'raw' and I can only access them once he has edited them. He hadn't done this one when I posted the first discussion. I much prefer this photo too but the whole series shows the life cycle of the banksia from blossom to seed-case.

I love the squirrels they have in the US and England. We don't have that sort here.
