Unexpected treasures

My mother died in Western Australia in 2014 and my blind brother who lived with her died in September. When we were cleaning out the house we came across some drawings which my mother did at school. This one of a flower of some sort was done when she was just 12 years old.
I had seen these before but she never talked much about her achievements. Later she very much enjoyed china painting and did some lovely work. She loved school but had to leave at 14 although she and her older brother rode their horses to night school for a further twelve months or so.
I'll share another drawing of hers later.

@LadyDuck My brothers have gone through my father's collections of books and documents. I cannot bring myself to look at them as I get overwhelmed with emotions. When he was alive he used to leave his wallet on his table. I did not want to touch it even leave alone see the contents - siva

You must have been fascinated to find these drawings and connect to your mum when she was young.

That's a very nice painting of your mom. It's amazing how she had saved it for decades,it's truly a treasure. That must be framed and preserved for the younger generations to see.

I have about four pieces altogether so I might frame one or two.

She was quite talented. Too bad she had to leave school so early, but I know it happened a lot.

@JudyEv Funny, my mother could recite some too. Her favorite seemed to be "In Flanders Fields (the poppies grow)," by an American named John McCrae, about WW I.

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever" as said by John Keats comes to my mind.
Yes, the lifestyles and circumstances they grew up in were different but they stoically carried on even leaving behind works of art. Whenever I look at what my father left, I realize I will never be able to live through his moments cherishing his life and the works he was engaged in - siva

@JudyEv The finesse in your Mom's painting can easily be noticed. No, you have not been unobservant; I've just been very busy with meetings these past months and onwards because of various projects of our cooperative.

I want to get a folder so I can keep them flat or I might frame a couple of them.

@BelleStarr I'd forgotten about your fire for a moment. That would make a huge difference to the number of mementos you'd have.
