A Surprise in my Garden

My First Daffodil of 2018

As I was coming back to the house after taking a sunset photo last night, I found a surprise in my garden -- the first daffodil of 2018. I hope it won't be the only one, because I see no sign of the others that usually pop up in my flower beds. I'm quite sure I have at least twenty of them that I planted in 2013. Maybe they just aren't ready to adorn my garden yet this year. You will probably notice I didn't get around to spreading the organic snail bait around. That's because I was sick before and after that rain we got last week. I have to remember to get it out before this week's expected rain. It's times like this I wish I had some ducks, but I don't think they are allowed here in the city. I hear they love to eat snails. Do you have any flowers blooming in your garden yet? Or is your ground still covered with snow?

The ground here still has snow and things won't start to bloom for a few months. Daffodils are the first to bloom. The ones here are weird and look ugly so I'm going to dig them up and get rid of them.

What month do your daffodils usually start blooming? I'm sorry yours aren't pretty enough for you to want them. I think they are such a cheerful flower to have around in winter.

We have no snow and therefore no surprises. I thought snails are edible

@allknowing I guess they would like rice fields with all that water. How do they tasted? I'd rather you tell me that finding out firsthand.

They are, but I don't know of anyone personally that eats the kind that hang out in our yards and eat our plants.

The only thing I am going to find out there is snow, ice and cold ground. Maybe a frozen stick or if I am lucky, rabbit tracks. I will have daffodils later, though!

Ducks do not eat snakes, some kind of ducks (Muscovy ducks) kill snakes to protect their eggs. I have seem primroses and wild violets in the garden.

I've never been successful with getting violets to grow here, but I can grow pansies. I just didn't get around to planting any this year.

@bagarad I never planted the wild violets, they started to show up in my lawn after a few years we lived here. I know that they are considered "weeds", but I love them.

We don't have any snow here in Texas but the ground is a bit hard. Since we just bought this house and moved in I am not quite sure what was planted here but I know my back yard will be full of flowers this summer when I can get back there to it. Love your daffodil, I had planted those in my garden in Colorado but I know they are not up yet there.

I love planting bulbs because I can pretty much plant them and forget them and they keep coming up every year. Unless they don't. I don't understand why I still see no sign of my other daffodils this year.

@cintol Tulips don't do as well for me as daffodils. I sure hope the rest of mine decide to come up.

@bagarad I planted lots of bulbs but only had a 50/50 chance that they would come up. I planted pink tulips one year and not one of them came up.

Daffodils are such bright, cheerful plants. And yes, ducks are great for eating snails and they don't scratch in a garden like hens do.

@JudyEv I have a friend that takes all my kitchen garbage to feed her chickens, and I'm guessing ducks might also eat plants.

@bagarad I knew they ate all sorts of things but I thought maybe they wouldn't be too destructive with garden plants.

Luckily, I live in an area that seldom sees snow. We usually do not see Flowers though until like April or so due to all the wet damp weather, but that Daffodil is beautiful. Great sign of Spring and Easter time

By Easter the daffodils have been replaced by irises, depending on whether or not Easter is in April as it normally is.

@minx267 So only part of them are pink? I think we call these jonquils. Most of mine have yellow centers, but they haven't come up yet this year.

You still have something to look forward to then. I've never seen a pink daffodil. You should post a photo when they come up.

There are white lilies, but I think they may be different than daffodils, which look similar to some lilies.

Part of the reason for the bulbs not coming up is it stayed so hot in Paso Robles through October and even into November. Bulbs need a certain period of cold for them to be dormant. The other reason is the drought. The one that bloomed must have been cool enough and got enough moisture to trick it into growing and blooming. If we don't get much rain towards the end of February and the beginning of March you might have to do some watering.

@BearArtistLady I'm afraid we have to go to Costco this Friday. We are out of everything and it's the only day Hubby and I don't have any medical appointments. I would so rather stay home because I'm behind on so many things. Is that the store Spring? I can't remember the cross street. I'm sure we can find a way to meet another time.

@bagarad Living here in the Paso area I wish it had been more rain! The lake could sure use some water as well as our water tables for our water supplies for drinking water. Your daffodils were a reminder that there is much beauty in the world and it's in all shapes and forms. If you're out and around this Friday afternoon between 2p.m. and 4:15 p.m. stop by Great American Antiques so we can meet. I work there one afternoon a week. It was usually Wednesdays (and was for a couple of years) but we got a new vendor in who signed up for all the Wednesday afternoons for two straight months, so I ended up with Friday instead. Anyhow come in and say hello.
