What's the Big Deal about 'Finding a Mate'? (or '-a Spouse, a Match, a Husband or Wife, a Mister or Mistress')

Looking at the very word "Mate" (said to have a root identical to "Companion"), its root means 'Having Food Together.'

Maybe the meaning intended there is the 'being in the same location at meal-time'-meaning, but ... I wonder ...
Maybe it means 'co-ownership of the food.' When God said "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will give him a mate," maybe what he really meant to say was 'Wow, I made too much food for just one guy; I better bring in another guest who'll eat just as much (if not more) and store the rest of the food like it's something precious.'
& the "multiply to fill the earth"-thing was just an extra, 'well, since you're here and since the process turned out that way'-task---secondary to "eat everything"
Yeah?
