Here we go some of my favorite tunes with the word "ROAD" in the title. One of our road users are truckers so before we do today's "Road" quiz, lets honor those roadway warriors and listen to a popular tune called Truckin' from the Grateful Dead. Fun Fact: -The line, "Busted, down on Bourbon Street" refers to an incident on January 31, 1970 when members of the band were arrested in a drug bust in New Orleans. The group was in town to play two shows at a club called the Warehouse when Lesh, Weir and Kreutzmann were all arrested along with crew members and fans of the band who had joined them at the hotel. Hope you enjoy listening to this live oldie but goodie from 1972. Here now are today's song and artist clues. See if you know these artists or their road songs: 1. This has been called "the ultimate bar song," and it is often played by bar bands everywhere. The song may have been inspired by a nightclub called Topanga Corral. To get to the club you had to take Topanga Canyon Boulevard, which is full of winding turns and requires eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. This album track was one of several that were not hit singles, but were some of the band's most popular songs. The album was a return to their earlier style. The tune featured a vocal by the singer encouraging the lead guitarist to do it, Robby, do it, when he was playing a solo guitar part. 2. The artist sang about these West Virginia roads but never visited there. The songs inspriration came from a postcard from that state sent to the song's writers. Bill and Taffy Danoff, who wrote the tune, was hoping to get Johnny Cash to record the song and almost didn't collaborate with this artist. This tune is considered the singer's signature song. This recording reached # 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley are mentioned in the track's lyrics. Well, there you go and thanks for participating or commenting on my post! *Bio info from Wikipedia and songfacts.com Photo- google images

My dad used to say that Mr. Deutschendorf was correct about West Virginia being “almost heaven” because “it borders Kentucky.” The Danoff went on to form the Starland Vocal Band, owners of one of the worst one hits in the world, “Afternoon Delight.” They were more or less “credited” with “starting” what jokingly became known as the “Best New Artist Grammy curse.” There was an endless list of people who were given that award who quickly faded (e.g., Debby Boone, A Taste of Honey, Christopher Cross) over Hall of Fame acts (e.g., Elvis Costello, Dire Straits, the Cars). Still, I do love that song....played it the last time I was in West Virginia. (What was I doing in West Virginia? Trying to get out! )

Yes, Kentucky is heaven in many ways...Love those beautiful thoroughbred horse farms. Birthplace of Abe Lincoln and home to Daniel Boone. Wish I still had my coonskin cap, lol. Remember that song "Afternoon Delight." Of course, it would have been better if I was "clueless" on that tune. #2 is a really terrific song. One always worthwhile to revisit from time to time....
