Once Again A Southern Stand Still

For the second time this Season, we had a snow event here in the South, that honestly was not as bad as the previous one, and once again all the schools closed and colleges. We only got at the most an inch. I awoke at 9 am because I couldn't fall asleep til 2 am and there was the inch of snow on the ground and the roads were clear. By noon, practically all the snow has melted. Yet, the schools are closed. I know all you up North laugh at us. And I agree, it is crazy. By now, we have had enough snow events here in Georgia for people to be more prepared. And my son, who is in College , 30 minutes away, missed his 3rd set of classes due to one day earlier this month that didn't produce any snow (but it was the threat of it that closed the college), then they had the MLK holiday where class didn't meet and now today they missed these classes. Do Colleges have make up days like many High Schools & Elementary do? They should because the College kids spend a lot of money to attend schools and end up taking years to pay off their student loans. The Colleges need to not waste class time. I texted my son earlier and said, the amount of classes he has missed due to weather and holidays, those classes should treat you as an online class would. Hopefully, the Profs are communicating with you online and assigning lessons to do.

It doesn't take long for missed classes to add up. I hope your son is given some way to make up for the lost time.

Thats up to the college. whenever we would be out for a hurricane they usually assigned reading/ things for the break. I had one professor be an ** in an online class because my part was without power for 7+ days so I missed two "classes". It was a non honors class. :(

@LeaPea2417 its ok. I argued it and eventually was allowed to make up the work. It just seemed so darn silly at the time.

Yes, when they cancel classes because of the weather, they could easily have the class on the internet so that the students don't lose out. Last Saturday we had 14 inches of snow.

I agree, they should do it on the internet not to waste class time. And, 14 inches of snow? If that happened here, the Governor would declare a state of emergency. LOL 1 inch, here will close the schools. LOL

My husband was a college professor up north. When and if a snowstorm closed the university, all that could be done was to excelerate the curriculum. MLK is a holiday and built in as a day off in some universities. Universities don't make up the days.

Yes, I was thinking they will probably accelerate the curriculum.

Snow in Georgia and I heard Florida too. Should I cancel my snowbird plans for the beginning of Feb?

We are much more prepared for the snow up north here. We have huge mountains of road salt and calcium chloride. It is crazy to see how huge the amounts are in the one area I drive past it’s nearly as far as your eyes can see. Funny because as I was reading what you wrote I was going to ask if they had make up days at college and then you asked the same thing

When I was in college there was no makeup days but that was long ago but I don't think the number of days is mandated as it is in other schools,

My university had an hour-based system. One cannot complete a subject without having to follow it for a specific number of hours. If for some reason the lecture was cancelled by the administrators, it was their burden to make it up on another date.

I do not know how it works here if students should miss classes. I never heard of school closed for snow here.

That is how most do it, go to school. We live in an area that doesn't get that much snow, so when it happens, even if it is just a small amount, it scares people driving, because people don't know how to drive in snow, so they close schools and some businesses.

I don't know if colleges make up lessons for days missed. Our schools are closed today too
