Do you practice fasting?

One of the things that had been talked about for communicating with god is the need for fasting. Do you practice this part of praying? In the past I use to. Then I just got out of the habit.

I have migraine seizures when I don't eat. I don't think God wants us to hurt ourselves. We can fast in different ways-not always food though. Sometimes I fast the internet for some time, sometimes I fast coffee for some time or anything else I enjoy. It shows my love for God in the same way.

I was going to mention that it doesn't have to be food related! I forgot the exact scripture but the gist of it was a public display of fasting doesn't serve the point of fasting. Giving up something briefly for/to god in private helps better in the communion with god.

@Daelii Yes Matthew 6:16-18 is where it says that.

In reality, eating has nothing to do with communicating with God. Clearly, religion does not really understand God at all. Prayer can be as simple as a thought.

True, in a sense. Fasting however isn't just about giving up food. A person can give up watching TV, or other worldly pleasure that isn't necessary for survival. In general, I thought fasting was a way to remove obstacles of pleasure to leave more room for eyes only on God during prayer.

@Daelii With that in mind, perhaps the question should be do you want to talk to God in the first place.

@bird123 Maybe, but that kind of question I think is up to each person to decide. I'm kinda more interested in those that already know they want to talk to god and curious to know, if they practice fasting as part of that effort!

I fast more for the health benefits rather than the religious aspect but I did fasting while studing the Bible and praying alone in my room although this is very rare.

It is part of our Lenten ritual but now we are past the age when some of it is required. I don't eat meat on Friday and I fast on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday but that is about it for me.

Nope! Hurting our body is not a way to please the creator. In fact, stay healthy and take care of yourself better. You are given a gift of life. Why punish your body?

Well fasting isn't just skipping food. Its removing obstacles in our life for a quiet, closer communion with god.
