What do you value, “your character or your reputation?”

I have been thinking about this contrast. There is a big variance between our reputation and character. In my opinion, I would rather have a bad reputation but maintain a good character within myself. One can easily emulate or fake a reputation but you can’t do the same to your character. Your character defines your personality whereas reputation is what others think of you. It’s only in the true man that the two phrases mean the same. When the inner self coincides with the outward life seen by people, we say that the reputation of this man and the man himself move simultaneously with equal steps and development. What is more, important to you, your “character” or your “reputation"?

I will always go with good character - one can have a good character but get a bad reputation due to lies and slander. The important thing to me is that I know what I am and God knows my heart - so I can sleep comfortably at night, regardless of what any may think of me. There is a popular saying which isn't altogether true - it goes like this: "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never harm me" - of course words can harm - maybe not physically - but socially and mentally - words can tarnish one's reputation.

I value my character more than my reputation, it is because i am who I am and not who they want me to be :) It doesn`t matter what people say as long as I know in myself that I don`t hurt anybody else. Then I`m happy and contented with that.

If I have a good character then my reputation will be good as well. Am I right?

@Sreekala That's right but the opposite is quiet impossible. A good character breeds a good reputation; however, a good reputation does not automatically breed a good character.

@Jeff2030 If a person's character is bad then how she/he can gain good reputation? I believe reputation and respect should be earned by its own. Am I Right?

@Sreekala I agree with you on that. In most cases a good reputation emanates from a good character. Thanks for your contribution.

@marlina I agree with you on this 100% character is extremely important to all. Good reputation is just but a byproduct of a good character. Thanks for your contribution.

We can't always help what our reputation may be, but our character is who we really are. I've read that our true character is what we do when no one is looking. Great post.

Interestingly enough, I have been distancing myself from people who give too much importance to their reputation. From what I have learned from life, our character is what makes our reputation. So, there is no need to run after reputation. Just build your character and reputation will follow on its own.
