Stuck for words

I have been trying to think of the terminology I want to use to describe how I have been feeling the past few days. Nostalgia isn't quite the right word, but it will do. There is another word whose origin I can't recall, but that is defined as a longing for something that never was or never will be again. That is somewhat closer to how I am feeling. I have been reading fiction of a historical nature, and my last read has me in a somber and confused mood. I have also been reflective, remembering stories told to me by family members. I feel almost as if my thoughts are in black and white, or a sepia tone that is indicative of the past. This would probably be the best time for me to put pen to paper.

You cannot feel nostalgia for something that never was, because you can only feel nostalgia for something that happened in the past, but it's lost and will never come back again.

.... I know. There is another word in some other language that circumscribes the feeling of longing for something that never was... I wasn't trying to insinuate that nostalgia was defined as such.

@LadyDuck The word I was referring to is of Welsh origin. It's Hiraeth. I wrote the exact definition under Elizabeth's post.

Maybe you have a little bit of homesickness for the way it used to be.

Don't you just hate when the right word is at the tip of your tongue but you can't quite reach it?

Hiraeth? It's the closest word I can currently think of, but it may not fully fit with what you were thinking of.

@GardenGerty From my Modern Welsh Dictionary Hiraeth [noun, masculine = longing (for home etc) As soon as you said Welsh I grabbed the dictionary off my shelf. I got it a few years ago but I know I originally saw the word online.
