You look just like...

We have all heard it. Our grandmother's might think we look a lot like our father's, or our aunt's might claim we look just like our mother's. Sometimes we look nothing like our parents, but everything like a relative we may have never met. "You are the spitting image of" those are words I have heard a lot in my life. "When you laugh like that you remind me of." is another thing I have heard, though not necessarily directed at me. Tonight I am looking at an image of a man that I believe to be related to me, albeit distantly. He would be a grandfather five generations back, and I look at him and see a family resemblance. His face is much more narrow than the face of any of my relatives today, but I can see in his sunken eyes and his strong chin, the visage of my father. There is another photo, but this one sits on a stack of books in the room next to me. I personally know the people within this photo, and I can see the very strong resemblance these people have to their own children. The picture makes me smile when I look at it,and it has my heart swelling with love and pride for the happiness I see within that photograph. There is yet another photo, though I am not sure where it is located now. The people within are unknown to us, though they may very well be family. They are themselves a family, as it appears a mother and father stand in the center of three children, the youngest of which is barely a year old. There is a grain sack at the foot of the middle child, and the group of people look tired but happy. The photo we have is a copy of the original, and it has been blown up to give more detail. The image is grainy from age and distortion as the original was smaller than a wallet portrait. Their blood may not run through my veins but I feel a connection to them through the centuries. A connection just as strong as the one I feel for that man with the strong chin and sunken eyes.

All the female cousins in my mom's side look like each other. Even people that do not know us say we look like each other.

Many years ago I was visiting my aunt when she was in the hospital for an operation. The nurse mis took me for her daughter. A different nurse thought that me and my cousin (her actual daughter) were sisters. I used to have a picture of my mom when she was a pre teen. She looked exactly like my sister did at the same age.

@jstory07 Yes, even more so when you don't see the resemblance yourself!

I love spotting the family resemblances in old photos. :)

Especially said photos where you have to question whether it's the family member listed on the back of the photograph or another entirely! I wish I still had the photograph of my mother when she was young. She looked exactly like my sister did at the same age.

It is interesting when looking at my Aunt and my one Sister. They look a lot alike. Personally I look most like my real dad, or like my Grandma did.

People usually think I looked like my mother but really my face doesn't look like her it's only my hair color and length as well as how skinny we both were. It is amazing though how people can get a certain physical feature of a relative from way back in their genetics.

Hmm could be. Peoples faces can change so much over time though and it seems like if they know one of our parents they think how we look just like them until they see the other parent then they think we look just like them

I think it starts at how they saw us at birth, and what resemblance they imagined they saw in our faces.

I love looking back at old photos, love the really old black and white ones. Good to look at older family members and remember the times.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah I agree with many people taking photos almost daily.

@kevin1877uk Sharing them on social media as well. Though there are photo printers for cellphone's now so maybe the use of physical photo albums isn't lost to us yet.

Every few years I go through a box of photographs of people I know only by name, or by vague memory. It is a lot of fun to look through them though I think the ready access to cameras now will somewhat ruin the allure of doing the same in the future.

As I grow older, I look like my mom but when I was younger, I look like my dad

I still look a lot like my father, to my chagrin.
