Memories with Granny

"Oh Granny, What's that?" I was meant to stay by her side, holding her hand as she took me on a tour of her mother's house. I was bouncing with barely contained energy as my eyes alighted on new thing after new thing. "Is that real gold?" It wasn't, but it was precious enough that I needed to be careful, and so I was led out of the room before I got any ideas. The kitchen was a massive room, separated by an island gleaming from the sun coming through the big screen door. The floors were black and white, a big checkered pattern that matched the counters and the appliances. The refrigerator had an ice maker attached to it and I wanted to play with it all day but was quickly led out to the balcony off of the kitchen. The view of the mountains around me was magnificent, and worked to soothe me a little bit as the adults around me talked. We didn't spend long enough outside though, before I was quickly reigned in beside my grandmother. My young mind was occupied with all these new and cool things, and the house that seemed humongous to me. All too soon it was time for me to leave, and I pouted the entire way to wherever we were off to next. ---- This happened *puts fingers in front of face to count* atleast 22 years ago, give or take. Of course some details have been forgotten over time. I don't really remember if the flooring in her kitchen was black and white, but I am fairly certain it was. I can't remember where we went after her house, but I am almost certain it was my other great grandmother's. I write this today in a sort of memory of my grandmother as this is the earliest memory with her that I can recall with some manner of accuracy. I took a photo of a picture with her and her mother in it, but I won't post that here. The photo was taken years ago, though I am not sure how many.

It sounds like your grandmother had a lot of new things that fascinated you. How nice you were able to visit them and her.

I was somewhere around 5 to 7 years old at the time so pretty much everything fascinated me.

@HazySue It is definitely an experience, seeing things through the eyes of a child.

That is nice you can remember the excitement you felt. How old would you have been at the time?

It would be so neat if you could visit it now and see what is still the same that you recall.

It is always good when you have good memories of your grandparents.

My grandparents raised me just as much, if not more, than my own mother.

I wonder how big the kitchen really was! Why were you there?

I think it was maybe a year before my great grandmother came to live down here with her daughter, my grandmother. My vague impression / childhood memory says that the trip was half a visit to all the relatives and half a starting the process of moving my grandmother down to us. Of course it's been so many years since that day. I am pretty sure the kitchen had a bit of a small dining space attached to it, which made it seem really big. I may have been younger than I remember being actually.

It seem your fascination was more with the new cool things than with your Granny. I wasn't able to catch what kind of person she was to you although you didn't want to leave.

This is about two different people. I was't leaving my granny there, but leaving WITH my granny. We were visiting her mother, my great grandmother.
