A Successful Experiment

Where, you might be asking, have I been? It's mainly due to my phone going belly up, but it has been quite the adventure. First of all, an allergic reaction landed my girlfriend in the hospital. With the hospital at max capacity, parking was impossible, so I spent some time scouting locations at which I could park the van without being towed (I found three.) So we decided to test out a few things. Colorado Springs has an anti-homeless law that forbids camping within city limits, which includes sleeping in your vehicle at night. We spent a few nights "camping" in my spots. I can definitely pick em: we weren't hassled once. Conversely, to further our experiment, we headed to one of the few Downtown Colorado Springs areas that has free parking, and where homeless tend to hang out. Within 45 minutes, we were approached by a police officer investigating "a suspicious vehicle," which is code for "potential homeless camping." (As we were only sitting there talking, nothing happened.) In the meantime, we learned that we can survive a few cold days/nights, although we do need to upgrade a couple of our cold weather items. We've also learned to bring along less food, and that we actually brought too much stuff in general. As for now, we are back in Manitou. We've checked into a marijuana-friendly motel. They have a "Canna Cabana" on the property, an indoor patio in which you can smoke pot. We hit that before we hit the showers. Next up: we'll be purchasing a few pieces of camping equipment, which we'll be testing during a week of camping beginning the day after the Super Bowl.

Oh no, we definitely aren't in need of help, we are actually doing this for fun while we are still relatively young. But thank you.

They were. Never know when we're going to end up somewhere we might have to keep a low profile. It was good practice.

Did you find out what caused the reaction (so she can avoid it)?? That’s scary. Are they going to give her an Epipen to carry in case it happens again? (I’ve heard those things are very expensive, and thankfully my allergies aren’t severe enough to warrant carrying one.) I’ve slept in my car three times (two overnights and a nap). Both overnights I stopped in truck stops. The first time a cop came around, which I found very curious because one of the purposes of truck stops is a place where truck drivers can stop and sleep. (Apparently just not “civilians.” ) The second time was great, no problems at all. The nap was at Cumberland Gap National Park. I don’t think I’d sleep in my car in town. Too much traffic. Places like truck stops, however, are generally fine (unless the manager has a hair up his butt like the first truck stop I slept at did). BLM properties are good, too. We don’t have a lot of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) places around here, but there are supposedly plenty of places out west. Can’t wait to hear more stories!!!

@teamfreak16 — glad she’s okay. Thank God I don’t have a peanut allergy....not as much as I love Reese’s peanut butter cups!!! (But I can’t eat peanuts any longer because of diverticulitis.)

@FourWalls - Oh yes, she could literally die from eating them.

It was peanut related. We think it was cake. Careless, but a lesson learned.

I would think Colorado Springs would be lenient toward parking overnight.

Nope. Quite the opposite. Too many homeless totally trash the area's where they camp.

I live in the Springs. Cant say I am fond of the growing number homeless people. But it is hard to live here with with crazy requirements such as having to make 3x the rent, rent rising to $1000+ for a one bed and you have to have a credit score above 600. I love Manitou!!Stay safe!

@taciaelisepeace - I understand people's concerns, but where are the homeless supposed to go? They really don't have a lot of options. I used to work at a homeless shelter in Wyoming. A shelter only holds so many people.

@teamfreak16 I can only imagine that they would not be in the best conditions.

@teamfreak16 True and as stated earlier they make it impossible to rent anymore and most don't qualify to buy a home. So they're just stuck out there.

So that's why you haven't been in here. That's a real adventure you and your girlfriend are having.

It's been a lot of fun so far, and all we are doing so far is experimenting to see what works and what doesn't.

I thought you'd been missing for a while. Do you know what the allergy was so you avoid it in future? And good luck with the camping trials.

@teamfreak16 Our daughter-in-law has huge problems with gluten. A few years ago, cross-contamination was a big problem but restaurants etc seem to be much more aware of it now.

She's allergic to a lot of stuff, but this was peanut related. Cross contamination. We think it was from some cake.

@teamfreak16 I noticed you have not been around much. You certainly have been busy. I was also in Colorado Springs. I like Colorado just to visit. I love living in Israel. How is your girlfriend now?

No, I really haven't been around much. We just spent a few days camping up in the mountains near Deckers. No cell service of any kind, and I do all of this my phone.
