Lately I have been spending a majority of my time picking up, throwing out, and rearranging stuff. On no, not my stuff, it is where it should be. I am cleaning up stuff that my mother left behind in my other house she was living in. I hate to say this but she and her friend that was living with her filled the house with things. I finally have the bedrooms, living, room, bathrooms, and kitchen shoveled out. Unfortunately a lot of the things that were in these rooms are resting comfortably in the garage. It's a good thing it is so big. It is an overwhelming mess but at least we now have it contained in a couple of areas. Someday, hopefully in the near future we will be able to put the house up for sale. If it wasn't a mixture of antiques, old crystal, and this type of things along with packet of sugar, salt, and so forth, it would have ben finished by now. Oh well, we will be having a huge yard sale along with having more antique deals come it and see what we have. This too will pass. Have you run across an overwhelming job that makes you want to throw up your hands and walk away? Hope everyone out there has a wonderful day.

Oh yes, I went through this at mom's house in 2016, she passed away the day before Thanksgiving in 2015 and when we finally got together to check out her abode it was overwhelming. She had been buying chest of drawers as needed because she wouldn't throw anything away. She kept junk mail, newspapers, magazines, fabric pieces, nails, bolts ... ok, I think you get the picture, right? .... what's really bad is no one noticed there were mice and roaches in those vacated back rooms of her house, I was too busy caring for her after I retired to notice. Watt a mess.

It sounds pretty much like my situation. Any little piece of paper, used napkin, anything you can imagine ended up blocking the pathwayws through the how. We had the problem with the colonies of roaches.

@rebelann they are cute as long as I see them on TV but to see them in person, no, then they aren't so cute.

We've just had a clearing sale of my brother's engines and tools. We've already managed to clean out the house but that was a bit of a nightmare too. Now my sister and I are going to have a garage sale (yard sale) as she hopes to move soon too.

@HazySue Actually it was the local Lions Club who did most of the work. And yes, I'll come and help.

It is nice of you to help your family members with the garage sales and such. It is a tremendous amount of work. Want to come over here to the US and help me?

My shed is kind of like that..things just seem to have accumulated in there. Then the former roommate who lived here put alot of stuff in there he had apparently been carrying around for years. Now in addition, to my junk, and stuff my ex put in there..his stuff is there..I hate it so much. I have made a little progress in there however, It will be very nice Tuesday and Weds so maybe I can work in there.

Good luck with cleaning out the shed. Things just seem to multiply like bunnies.

My Mom has always had more cute "stuff" than house. At one point I think she just started tossing stuff cause hey what to do with it? Part of it came from all the kids giving her little figurines and such and her not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings. I kind of dread it if we move. I have been tossing and giving away and yet I don't know. I need to do more that's for sure.

@HazySue I'm noticing that houses that we can afford IF we move are going to be a bit smaller so we might be selling or giving away some furniture.

@sallypup I find that smaller can be better. There is less to clean and take care of.

Moving back into a smaller house has given me the opportunity to realize just how much junk I have accumulated. I have been busily getting rid of it along with my mothers things.

Oh my! You have a huge job ahead of you. I'm glad you got it out of the house, but with it sitting you the garage, you still need to deal with it. I hope the yard sale and antique people can help take it off your hands.

@HazySue I hope most of it goes to good homes and you don't need to do a lot of carting.

The antique people have helped some plus we donated a lot of items. When we have the yard sale the rest of the items will be gone even if they don't go in the yard da=sale they will be carted away.

I still have things that I am not using anymore but I am still keeping them. I don't know when I will be able to arrange them or throw them.

I live in a hoarding house, though we can get through the house comfortably... It (hoarding) runs in my blood so it feels as if I am constantly battling myself to NOT keep things I really don't need. I am sorry you have had to deal with cleaning up so many things. I am sure it is an emotional strain as much as it is a physical one.

It is. I feel sometimes that I am looking at personal things and just don't know what to do with them. They may mean nothing to me but they certainly must have meant something to her.

Yup it was a disaster cleaning out my moms house when she couldn't live alone anymore. It seemed to take forever and she saved everything under the sun

I guess a lot of us end up shoveling out the houses of our loved ones for one reason or another.

I'm so sorry. That must be such an overwhelming task to do. Yes, we went through the exact same thing when my father decided to sell the house he built after my mother passed away, and to his home when he passed away. It was sad and grueling.

It is. It is also exhausting. I wish that people understood that if they do not clean out their own homes that it will fall to their loved ones. It's a hard thing to do, go through their things, after you love someone you love.

Packing to move is giving me this feeling. Last week I heard on the radio a way to simplify... The five second rule....make a decision in 5 seconds...than stand by your decision...generally our first reaction is the correct action....but we start to second guess.....

That is great advice. I also go by the saying "When in doubt, throw it out".

Wow, you really take on the work. I can't image doing more than the one house.
