Does society in general place less value on women’s work?

The discussion around my post a few days ago brought this up. Does society in general – both men and women – place less value on work done by women, no matter what it is? Yes I know that traditionally, managing a home and bringing up children – work generally done by women - was considered unimportant, although it could be argued that these occupations form the basis of society without which everything else would fall apart (but that’s a topic for another post). What I’m talking about now, is when women take on ‘prestigious’ jobs – do those occupations then lose their prestige? For example, jobs such as teacher, lawyer, doctor, bank manager – in times past the men who held these posts were respected and regarded as pillars of the community. Now that women are taking on these roles in increasing numbers, has the high regard in which these occupations were held, faded away? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2018.

I think people get hired because they are qualified. They chose the wrong candidate for the job regardless of the gender the company suffers.

I consider that to be absolute nonsense. If a person attains a specific role then gender is irrelevant.

It certainly should be, maybe I'm imagining it but it seems to me these professions are not as respected as they used to be.

Sadly sexism and inequality still exist in the world.

I don't know about being faded away, but women are paid less than men in the same position, at least in the US.

@ramapo17 I'm glad you didn't suffer discrimination. The thing is that normally no-one knows how much their co-workers earn, they just assume everyone at the same level earns the same, and it turns out that isn't the case.

@Fleura You are right. We are not suppose to know what others make but we did in some places I have worked in my lifetime.

That wasn't true for me. I was one of the few females with a management position and I made more than the men.

Women's contributions are often overlooked or not valued. It's after the fact that they seem to realize the contributions that have been made.

Unfortunately probably true. But I think high profile women do receive respect.

It will take years to recognise women in general and their occupations. But I notice the fact that this is being discussed they will get the place they deserve.

It was the case in the past for sure, right now I feel that in some countries women's work is considered exactly the same as men's work.

this can be a tough one to answer. Leave it up to the women here.

I don't agree with that. If a woman has a job outside of the house she should be acknowledged the same way a man would be. This is not the old days any more.

I think to some degree this is true, although it's sad that this occurs.

I don't think the jobs themselves necessarily lose prestige because of women filling those roles. Rather I think society in general is moving toward a more egalitarian view of positions. However, there is in many cases a disparity between the pay of women and the pay of men doing the same work.
