Because of its very fertile soil, NJ is known as the Garden State.
Became the third of the original colonies on Dec. 18, 1787.
Now, industry surpasses farming and is now the most densely populated and urbanized state, especially around the counties close at to New York City.
Atlantic City is a favorite tourist area.
Motto: "Liberty and Prosperity"

My dad always called New Jersey the "armpit of the nation." I've visited there a few times. Can't say I disagree with him. Now I know that's being mean to all the wonderful people of NJ, but man there's garbage and litter all over the place there. They really need to take more pride in the appearance of their state! Maybe it's New York's fault....maybe all the garbage from NYC somehow ends up in Jersey!

@IreneVincent I'm sure the whole state is not like that, but Newark certainly was a dirty, smelly and rotten city. I must admit though, that I really loved Hasbrooke Heights, it was a very pleasant city in Jersey.
