Bench Hogs

There are many incredibly selfish and inconsiderate people in the world. I seem doomed to meet each and every one of them personally. It is bad enough that some people won’t vacate a seat for a pregnant lady, a one legged individual, or an elderly person carrying a lot of heavy shopping. I have seen people eople who take a seat on a bench built for three and expect to keep it just to themselves really annoy me. You see a man or woman sit on a bench and fill the remaining space with shopping bags, expecting anyone else to stand up. Many people in fact do stand around them reluctant to ask them to let someone else sit down as well. I often walk up and ask politely but insistently for bags to be moved aside to enable me to sit down. This is usually done with a begrudging stare, and sometimes the bench-hog will get up and move off with said baggage as if deeply offended to seek another place to let their bags sit down. Such people also take over a bus seat for two by sitting as close to the outer edge of the seat as possible in the hope that no other passenger will dare ask them to move in and enable others to sit down too. I have seen people stand up right through a journey rather than ask them to move aside. I always stride right up and insist that they do move in. They glare at me as if it is the end of the World, but do reluctantly move aside, tutting and glaring at me as they do so. Arthur Chappell

As you say, it's very inconsiderate to behave like that. I have asked a few people to move their bags so that I could sit down, and I have never had a bad response. They usually say sorry and move them. I'm just lucky, I guess.

@jaboUK that i good - if they are happy to move their things, no problem. I sometimes put my bag next to me on benches and train seats but I move them as soon as other passengers embark and approach

Everyone who doesn't ask them to move deserves to stand!

Unfortunately, some people just don't think of those things like others, they think only of themselves which is very sad. Good for you though having enough of a voice to ask them to please move. Most people wouldn't say a word.

I don't blame you, there is no need for someone to take up a seat for their bags. Thats rude

We'd all love a double seat (like in the Ben Elton stand up routine from the 80s) but it's not always possible (well, not unless they introduce quadruple-decker buses and change all the routes involving bridges).

@asfarasiknow yes it is nice when there are fewer passengers and therefore seats to spare

@arthurchappell My local council recently put metal bars down the middle of benches in public parks to deter homeless people from sleeping on them. They changed their minds after a public outcry.

@asfarasiknow nice that the public raised objections - I am happy for homeless people to take the benches

I always offer my seat to the very people you describe at the bus stop and such.

There are many people who think the world revolves around them..I will admit I am not perfect but I do try to have some awareness of the needs of other people especially if it is crowded and bench space, or seating space is at a premium. I ran into more than my fair share of Aholes with this whole room renting thing.

@snowy22315 it is frighteing how many a-holes there are - rather draws Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest into doubt

Some people want to be told twice, thrice to make space for others before they do so. I wonder why people don't take the initiative. It's part of the selfishness culture and me-first attitude that has infected lots of people these days.

It's mainly the homeless who occupy benches here.

@JohnRoberts I don't mind the genuinely homeless using the benches - they clearly have a greater need than I would require

This is something that really irks me when I get on public transport. Many people seem to do it and they do it even though they know the bus will fill to capacity. I think it's completely ridiculous. I am not afraid to ask them to move but they are almost always surly as a response. I was once on a bus which was running late and it pulled into the side of the bus station entrance and was letting people off before it could pull into the official place. I was catching a connecting train so I needed to get off and when I said 'excuse me, I need to get off' to the man beside me he turned and actually said "I'm not moving" and I had to literally push by his legs with my big bag and squeeze out. It was horrible and humiliating and put me off wanting to use public transport ever again. If I'm honest I would like a seat by myself rather than sit with a horrible stranger like this but I would still never do that thing putting my bag up on the seat.

I ask, politely at first, but insisting if they do not dare to move their stuff. There are many trying to ignore you, it's rude and selfish.

On the bus I do make a beeline for the seat with a bag on, just to spite the bag ... it didn't pay for a ticket! Bench hogging is not good, nor is not giving up your seat on the bus {or at least offering} when someone who obviously needs it more gets on, but some people may have good reason for not giving up their seat - not all things are as blatantly obvious as pregnancy, old age and only having one leg!

I know what you are saying. When I had to take the bus with my suitcase and people would not let me sit down or move when I had to get off.
