Why wait for birthdays?

After enjoying my birthday weekend - I'm thinking about turning it into a birthday month! Ha ha! No seriously though... as I enjoyed my day, I had the thought - why do people wait for their birthdays to treat themselves? I know everyone does something different - everyone enjoys something different and some people don't observe theirs (nothing wrong with that) - but I do hope those that don't observe - do have a "you" day every once in awhile. So, I didn't do any thing too big and fancy but I had a great time. On Thursday (actual birthday) - I went out to eat for dinner and supper with my parents. My meal of course, was free both times , I was thankful for my parents to go with so I could get the free meals. :-) (Mexican and buffet for "German" night) During the afternoon - I went to buy make up, and bargain shop. On my birthday I find there are lots of discounts - winter items on mark down. And I usually take this opportunity to stock up on gift ideas for people later in the year, and this year did not disappoint. My parents got me the gift of good sleep - a new bed (that is a very nice gift!) and , while the bed will be delivered on the 9th - I did pick out my new pillows on 2/1. Ahhh new pillows are so nice. Maybe I'm getting old. lol. I bought myself some items, some splurges,... The next day, 2/2 Friday - I had dinner out with friends, thankfully the Mexican restaurant was gracious enough to extend the birthday dinner offer, and then I went out to a bar with friends for dancing. So many people showed up, so many people gave cards, gifts.... I felt really special by it. The next day 2/3 Saturday I stayed home and did absolutely - nothing. I just had no energy. I'm still blaming the surgery. Anyway! Of course we cannot expect fanfare and gifts from people on every day, and eating out a lot / eating cake a lot gets not only expensive but adds up on the waist line. Of course splurge shopping is to be limited for the sake of one's wallet as well. But what is wrong with having such a day quarterly? Or something like that? A day where you do what you want, whatever you consider fun.? Why wait for one's birthday? Photo: Pixabay

For me every day of the month of September -my birth month - was special. I did something nice for me every day - not only on the 13th.

Glad you had such a nice birthday and that's a great idea. Pity about waistlines isn't it? Think of the fun we could have if we could just ignore our waistlines. I think mine is a 'weightline' or maybe a 'wasteline'.

Happy Birthday! I like the idea of restaurants giving out free meals for birthdays. It's not something that is offered here in the UK. Mind you, if it was German night I would pass, as I am not fond of bratwurst.

@FayeHazel For some reason I thought you would prefer an English sausage.

Thanks! Oh yeah - off the top of my head I can think of 8 places in the area that give a free meal - many others will do things like a free drink, free dessert, etc... No brats for you? Seriously? lol.... that was one of my fave things

I'm so happy you had a great birthday and weekend. Never thought about that, sounds like a great idea. However, I have me days all the time. I don't live with anyone or am responsible for anyone anymore, so all my days are me days. Some more special than others, like today when I went to a movie.

Isn't dinner and supper the same thing . Most I know have them days, whether its shopping, seeing a movie, going out to eat etc. But they don't count it as another birthday, just a day to live. Its nice you had your parents and friends to go out with. Happy birthday again

lol. To my way of talking it's: Dinner=noon meal Supper=evening meal though some people go about it this way: lunch=noon meal dinner=evening meal I don't know what causes the different meal names, I've heard it's regional , but I've also heard it's city folk vs. country folk .... that's why I always ask what time when asked for a meal :-) Thanks!

Faye, it sounds like you had a really good birthday and I am happy for you. My brother used to say when I lived in Minneapolis that I celebrated my birthday for a whole week. Actually I have two birthdays. The one I was born on and my Hebrew birthday and there are lots of times I cannot celebrate my English one because it falls in a time that I cannot so I have my Hebrew one. I like your thought Faye.

Glad you enjoyed your birthday. Yes, I think people should treat themselves now and then. Latvian people have it great. In the Latvian calendar besides their birthdays they can also celebrate a day when their name is written in the calendar and that day is their Name's Day and can also be celebrated.

@MALUSE Ah thanks for the head's up. "Auto correct" didn't have a suggestion for Spatzle. It was one of my favorites on the buffet along with the brats :-)

There's this local buffet restaurant - you go through the line and pick what exactly you want to eat. some things are always available, such as the salad bar, baked chicken, mashed potatoes , soups.... those things always stay the same, but on different nights of the week they switch out some of the other choices. Thursday is "German" - but other days are "Italian", "Chicken Wings", "Comfort Food", "Mexican", .... Not sure how authentic but there was spatzel, potato pancakes, bratwurst and kraut, Sauerbraten, and.... some kind of breaded cutlet which I think was supposed to be some kind of schnitzel maybe?....

Oh you do have a point. If every day were "fun" then it would lose it's appeal.... I think.... perhaps 4 times in the year is a better idea! A quarterly birthday :-)

Almost every time I want to treat myself, the money usually has to go toward something else. I need a camera for work, yet my laptop power cord is now somehow spliced. Radio Shack's cheapest cord is $70.00! So, now I am stuck. My cellular phone's camera will no longer work and I need some nice girly clothes. When I want something, something bad always happens. My birthday is usually forgotten.

Ah I have had that experience at times too. It is disappointing but at least one has the funds for the needed items. I hope you have people who won't forget your birthday around you, but -- if so-- I hope you remind them

Happy belated Birthday! Everyday is a "me" day. Well, not as full and exciting as the week you had. I barely celebrate my own day of birth, I should probably follow that idea, especially when I happen to have the chance and be in the right mood for doing so.
