A shopping spree on my credit card and it wasn't me

Someone went on a shopping spree on my credit card yesterday. This is the first time any such thing has happened to me and I am so thankful that the credit card company was able to notice it in time. By 11 AM this criminal had already purchased a Netflix service, electronics and Vie en Rose products. I had just got out of bed when the fraud department of the credit card called to say there was activity on my credit card. I don't usually use it to purchase anything online, so this was a shock. The only thing I recall doing is paying for postage on a parcel online a few days before this happened. In a few hours, this crook did more shopping on my credit card than I did in years. I credit the CC company with identifying the fraud so quickly and cancelling the card. Now I have to wait for another one. Just a cautionary note. If possible check your credit card activity daily. Has your credit card information ever been stolen?

Good that they were caught quickly. Yes, it also happened to me but they were caught right away and the card was cancelled. I have no idea how they got my information.

No I have not had that happen to me, and sorry to read it has happened to you. The credit card company will take care of the criminal.

@Freelanzer They at least will put the charges back on..credit cards are good like that. It is debit cards that are not so good to use online.

I'm glad that the credit card company notified you and you were able to cancel your card. I do check it on a daily basis to make sure. This has happened to me before and I had to call and report it. Thankfully, they were really helpful. So, that's why I check regularly.

@Freelanzer it’s not a pleasant situation. At least you’ve learned your lesson. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again.

I have this fear that someone would shop on my debit card when I fill in my card number and pin online. Thank God you CC company discovered the fraud quickly.

@Freelanzer Yes, you have a right to know. That is what you should ask the credit card company. They will willingly tell you because they also want to prevent such things happening again.

My card was not stolen. I had it all the time. Someone used the number to go on a shopping spree in Oklahoma and online. I live in Florida. I don't know how they got my card number. I had to go over the accounts with the fraud department to tell them what I did not buy. They kept asking whether I was sure I did not spend it online. I had the card canceled and a new one issued.

@Freelanzer My son says that people use scanners to steal the numbers. They could walk by you in the store and take the number off the card in your wallet. I wonder if aluminum foil would help.

@akalinus I suspect this is probably how they got it. Have to find a way to protect cards in future

My card wasn't stolen either so I am not sure how they got the number. Very scary thought.

Wow, isn't that lucky that the company was so on the ball? Were they able to prevent the fraudster getting away with his/her purchases?

Not sure but it just means the places they purchased from won't get paid but perhaps they can identify the fraudsters. As far as services like Netflix I am sure the charges would be reversed and they won't be enjoying it for long.

Yay for your Credit Card company finding out about this, and calling you and putting a Stop payment. That is a Good CC company. Some yrs ago we had someone use my husbands Debit Card number at Walmart and they were in CA. When we questioned the bank they said we shop on Walmart so how can we prove it was not us? Needless to say, we left the Bank far behind right after that

I do check my finances daily. That is scary. I had to get a new card a couple months ago and it only took two days to get the new one.

I experienced this last year. And all the purchases were online too. Both on iTunes and other sites I wasn't even aware of. Fortunately, iTunes refunded me my money and the credit card company did the same, and cut my old card. The replacement card came quick too. It only took two days I think.

I don't recall. That is scary. So did you cancel everything and get issued a new one or did they catch the person who did it and how did they get your credit card?
