You are what you eat, it is said, but the truth might more be that you are how you eat!

How could the way we eat be more important than what we eat?

"The way one eats, defines what kind of a person he is mentally and spiritually." Peter Deunov, (1864 to 1944), the great Bulgarian philosopher said this. I have even heard it said that the way you chew your food also indicates how you are relating to life. If you eat very quickly, are you also trying to get through life, without savouring it, and enjoying its taste. Maybe you are not happy with the reality of your life, so much so, that you just want to get through it, but without stopping to really swallow, or to chew over the truth of it more, so as avoid growing your understanding of it all, as it's all too painful to bear. You do this because you might feel you are being forced to swallow a reality that you don't really like. Food enters the mouth from the world and then is transformed into energy in you to enliven the body, and also to allow a better connection to be made to the soul in a way. Not a better connection, per se, but a more better acceptably recognised one, because feeling the energy coming to you from your soul aligned with your food intake doubles its effect, so you feel full of spirit then too. Does our body and the way it is, really relate in these ways to our inner self? Is our way of eating and breathing really indicative of anything else, or not? Well, I feel that this correlation of mind, spirit, soul and body is indeed a very real one. For example, the sleepiness and tiredness that I feel right now is related to my wanting to leave life, because it has become too much for me to handle. All life and its living reveals such idiosynchronistic outer feelings, as they are often twisted tightly around certain inner states, that are either not being fully accepted, or perhaps they are being rejected entirely. You must not tie yourself up with yourself then to be free. A blocked nose restricts your breathing. When this happens to you, are you blocking something else in your life, stopping it from coming into your life, by your creating this physical barrier to the World of full life, which full breathing indicates, or is indicative of? In my own case, for example, I used to suffer terribly from asthma. Luckily, I seem to have moved past this affliction now, and it no longer affects me, at all now. I have even dropped all of my medication. I also have a crooked septum in my nose that only allows me to breathe through only the one nostril at a time. I am always being restricted from full breathing then, by this condition. Is this perhaps indicative that I have placed a barrier in place to my connecting fully with the world, or not then? I would probably answer this with a "yes", because the life we take in is indicative of the life we want to give out. I am afraid of life and full living (I have always been so, and even now, this is true of me and I am over 60 years old now!) and this is what these two conditions are, and were showing to me, even now. Some of my fear must have left me though, as my asthma has left me. Maybe, I am less afraid of myself, have more understanding, and have accepted life, and the World, a little bit more now, than which I did when I was younger. You should not allow (or try not to allow) your outer state to restrict your inner state, nor vice-versa, is what I might conclude from all of this type of thinking and contemplation, on these things. The way we eat, how much we eat, and the amount of stress we are living with all can have such an effect on how long we live. I too have that thought like you, life is all too much. I am sorry to hear that from you.

@Courage7 Yes, thanks. I do feel that all that we are doing, and saying here, is also part of a larger something too. We are all adding to the wealth pool of wisdom, that we can all dip into, as we are the ones building it too!! Yes, the connections made here can reach deep at times, and touch us deeply in real ways too, at times, as well.

In our Ayurveda tells about how to eat and what to eat to avoid diseases. If we eat and drink properly food and water is the best medicine for many diseases.

That's interesting. It may be true. Our eating habits can change according tour mood.I used to eat slow and savor every bite. That may mean that I'm interested in every step of my life.Whenever I'm bored and alone I always eat in front of a TV or watching videos in my laptop never minding about the food. These days my eating habits was changed.I'm eating faster but I can't really savor the taste of food.I feel that everything just lack flavor.Maybe I just feel sad and loss my appetite.

Yes, thanks, and I feel that in individual cases there might be unique meanings too, for each individual. When we eat slowly, sometimes it might mean that we want to be in more control of our life, other times, it might be that we have just read a book that tells us that it is more healthy to do so....LOL...

I like to enjoy the food and eat it not in a rushed manner like some do. I don't rush anything I do except when I have little choice but to be otherwise. It is fascinating to see eating habits of some and that reflect their state of mind and general attitude to life. We have limited control over our health and how long good health lasts, so every moment counts - siva

Yes, it's not just our food that we rush. Probably then every type of habit, and every way of behaving has some type of inner meaning, reflecting various parts of our state of minds too.

@Shiva49 That's true, our habits can shape us, and control pretty much the direction that we are going in. It is good to look at them from time to time, to see if some of them need some spring cleaning. Routines are much the same as habits, and should also be examined to see if they are still serving us, or not, as well.

@innertalks It is worthwhile to ponder about our habits from time to time and make adjustments. I like to observe others and if some aspects are worth emulating I do. In a nutshell, we have myriad ways to make our lives meaningful and fulfilling - siva

Yes, I have heard it said that chewing is actually the beginning of the digestive process. Eating while we are worried and anxious can affect our digestion, as doing this tends to release more acid into our stomachs too. We should investigate and make peace with anything that is upsetting us and enjoy our meal without still worrying about stuff. This is what saying a prayer before a meal is designed to achieve. We cut ourselves off from our anxiety, hand it over to God, thank him for our food, show gratitude for our life, and sit down to enjoy our meal then, with a much better chance of our digesting it all more properly then too.
