Neighbors are sometimes closer than you realize

Back in 1984, when my parents bought this house for me to live in, I said then that I was never going to move again. At that time I was working for the State of Texas. I continued working for the State until 2005. Now, while I was working first in one section and then moved to another, I met a number of people. One of these ladies I first got to know while I was working for the first section and saw sometimes because, while I wasn't in or near her area, we were in the same building. Granted it was a big building that we had moved to, but the previous building wasn't that big. As the years went by, my section was shifted out of that building and I was also legislatively transferred to another State Agency. Meanwhile, the house across the street was a rental, and had several good neighbors, and then a couple of really bad ones. One left and stole all the appliances. The next people were not so good, but their friends that were there all the time were worse. They'd come and play loud, obscene rap music at the top of their car radio volume. Finally, after frequent complaints, the landlord evicted them. Less than a month later, we had new neighbors moving in. I had been out, maybe at church, and didn't get home late. I saw the new neighbors in silhouette of their garage light. Now, remember, I am not actually seeing them, only in silhouette. The lady was tall, about as tall as her husband, and she was pregnant. I turned to @Maggiepie and said: "I think I know her." Yes, it turned out it was this lady who I worked in the office building those years before. I have since watched her first daughter, that she had already had before moving in, and her two other children born since grow up and am now watching her grandson growing up. I won't say we are best friends, but we are friendly. Her husband helped me once when I ran out of gas, he took me to the gas station. He and a friend helped me get something heavy moved from my car to the front door. These days, if you don't have children, I guess you don't get to know your neighbors very well, but I'm glad I have at least one neighbor that I know will keep an eye on my house, because I do the same for them.

A fellow from up the street took his snow plow all the way down to my house today. I don't know his name. And sometimes Christy on the one side or Fay on the other will do the walk in front of my house. And I sometimes do theirs. It's a nice, friendly little place.

That's a good thing to have. I'd probably spend most of my winter hiding inside if I had snow like you do.

In India mostly people live in unison and harmony. On an average most of us have good neighbors! at many places neighbors are like family members who share the happyness and grief of the family! I recall my neighbors who were Muslims and though we belonged to different religion there was no differences between the two families are we used to live together as if we belonged to one family! That is the way of living in India! Thanks for initiating an interesting topic!

That's nice. I guess these days we just live too much inside, at least me and my wife do. She's got a vision problem I talked about and can't bear bright light. I have a health problem, fibromyalgia, that makes being outside hard if the weather isn't perfect, not too hot or too cold. Most of the summer is too hot and right now its too cold.
I've talked about my wife. Even when she was my roomie, I talked about how she was blind - her preferred way to refer to it. She does have some vision, but...

I do that with the other neighbors, but except for the neighbors across the street and one next door, I don't even know their names.

I agree. I'm a woman, living with only other women in the house - now with my wife. There are times when I need someone a bit stronger than I am for something.

It is amazing how great neighbors can turn out to be in times of need. I'm a pretty much stay to myself person who has learned to keep people at arm's length. They know I'm there for them when they need help but I'm not much for having "sitting and having tea gossip" visits. Then the house burned down. I was amazed to put it mildly! The next morning neighbors showed up with clothes, personal care items, and even sent cash to help out. The help continues, the neighbor below me who also lost his place is going to clear the rubble from his lot and from the sounds of his last email he may be going to help me with the cleanup of my lot. His is even sadder as he just bought his place and hadn't even been a member a month when his place burned down! You may not be really close with your neighbors, like me, but when you need them the great ones are there.
