Is A Storm A Coming?

Nope, this is just my normal shopping. I do it twice a week and especially in the winter, it never fails, I get asked "Is a storm a coming?" I explain "nope we go through 12 gallons of milk a week, 6 loaves of bread and 90 eggs. This is my first trip of the week, I will be back to stock up again." I get a few comments about how we drink a lot of milk, we do, but really we only drink a glass for breakfast and supper. I think that is pretty normal. It has crossed my mind that maybe I should have a little fun and say, why yes, the biggest one in 50 years, better go stock up before they run out of Milk, eggs and bread! But I have not been that mean yet. Do you drink a lot of milk? Do people comment on your groceries?

I don't drink a lot of milk anymore but I used to buy gallons when my children were young. I'm sure with your big family you are a familiar face in the supermarket

@LadyDuck That is fantastic, I try to shop for a month when I go to Sams (warehouse style store) but I still end up hitting the local market about once a week to restock on the staples like milk, eggs and bread.

There is only the two of us so our shopping doesn't usually excite any comments - except that sometimes we buy 4 dozen cans of tuna when they're half price. .

I do that too, we love our tuna. Hardly see it for .50 cents a can, that used to be my magic sale price.

@mom210 We used to get it for 50c but it's regularly $2.90 now. On sale, it will be $1 so we really stock up when it gets down to that price. Vince has it most lunchtimes.

@mom210 Uhhh... your husband doesn't drink milk, does he, Kim? If he does, you need to read about men drinking milk and having to have prostate surgery. And if you drink a lot of cow's milk, you need to watch for the signs of cataracts for yourself. Here is a link to an article talking about the studies correlating milk and prostate cancer for men: And here is one talking about the adverse affects cow's milk can have for women: https://preview.tinyurl.com/milkisbadnews

WOW! That is a lot of groceries, Kim! (I'm sure I'd be looking at your cart and wondering if you were stocking up for a few months, at least!) No, Pretty and I use a couple dozen eggs a month, maybe a half-gallon of milk in a month and usually one and a half loaves of bread in a month. Nobody even looks at our cart when we are stocking up because of a big storm. (Not that we've ever stocked up for a storm, but sometimes I will go get an extra dozen eggs, if I've been craving omelets. ) Pretty and I don't drink milk. Pretty will use some over cereal, but we don't use it for anything else, at all. Not even in our cooking. We use Almond Milk in our cooking.

@mom210 Well, that is odd, Kim... Almond Milk is cheaper here than cow's milk! (I wonder what the difference in price is caused by?) I use Almond Milk in my cooking, but it tastes too sweet for me to be willing to use it any other way.

Its just my husband and I in the house now so I am lucky if I shop once a month now but I can't imagine buying that much milk at one time. You must have a couple of refrigerators just to hold it all

@cintol I have gotten used to it, I just base my others errands around the trips. Drop off this kid, pick up milk. It would help me so much if I had an Aldi in my little town, their milk is less than $2 a gallon but it is an hour away.

No, I hardly drink any milk at all. I sort of drifted away. And no, we get no comments on our grocery (sometimes up to three carts). We will shop sometimes for 3 months altogether with non perishable items...because making grocery is such a chore! Other people do the same.

@mom210 I suppose we adapt to our situations. I say if it working for you go ahead and do it. I have never bothered much about what people says anyway. There are places and chores that I don't like to do, so it makes sense to do that as fast and as best as I can. Once a month to the grocery store seems okay to me.

Every time I stocked up the household grocery, people often commented too. I don't buy lots of milk or bread, but tomato cans, soup cans and cleaning agents or things in the kitchen. God knows what I really get each time, it depends on what we need at the time.

@mom210 Some people were surprised when they saw me buying a tray of tomato cans. I had to tell them I did bolognese sauce with it (a tray has about 12 cans, I need 3 for each 500g). They then asked me what was the recipe... Another time, people asked me what I did with flour (the all-purpose one). I only bought 2kg at the time. They were amazed that I could make pizza or fancy bread with them.

As a big boy or a small horse, I am a huge consumer of milk. I drink two gallons a day usually chugging a jug at a time. It is crazy for a normal person, but I am not a normal person. It wasn't easy at first but the more I craved milk, and the more I kept growing, the easier it became to drink a gallon of milk down from one day to minutes. Now, it is normal for me. No, my milk consumption does not help the grocery bill but then again, I live by myself and spend about as much on food as a family of four would in a week just for myself. Most people just say that 'well he is a big boy', or 'you must play football' or 'I can't imagine how expensive it is to feed you' or 'you can probably clean out my fridge in a day'. The milk chugging is funny because people worry if I get hit by a car, the car will sustain more damage than me. I like my expensive habit.

I stopped drinking milk when I have tasted coffee and milkshake already. The milkshake has milk at least. I am not into drinking milk anymore. The doctor told me to drink a high-calcium milk but I just requested that she prescribe me a calcium supplement instead.

Yes, for just a couple we drink what others consider to be a lot of milk. But I beg to differ that there are a lot worst things that we could be drinking, and milk tastes SO good!. I've always had comments, do you run a day care, and things like that. And of course I buy a lot of other dairy products, cheeses and yogurt.
