We got Max when he was age 2 as his former owners could not keep him he is now 13 almost 14 and so a very old dog. He has arthritis of his hips and his eyesight is not as keen as it used to be and he is a bit deaf. But he had a good winter we got a nice mat he lies on next to my recliner chair and near the warm wood stove. He loves it. He goes out side most days for a bit to do his duty, check things out, harass the cats a bit and let the other two dogs (My sons dogs) know who is boss still. When he is outside we keep him on a wire run and chain so he does not roam or wander as we live rural and people do not like dogs running around or bothering livestock. He would go on many walks daily with hubby, my grandson or another of our grandchildren and or if we are outside he can be loose. He does not much want to go on walks anymore or not far. He is slowing down. But he loves the pats, pets and the big knuckle bones we get him. And lying by the warm fire on a cold bitter day. He has pretty much made it through another winter. Not sure if he will next winter as he is slowing down a lot, sleeping a lot more and some days when it is really cold out he limps a great deal and has a harder time getting up. But he is still with us. He is a mix of Great Dane and Bull Mastiff. He adores the children. His favorite thing to do though is lie next to the fire and chew on a big knuckle bone which he guards jealously if my son brings his two dogs in. I hope me makes it another year but time will tell. He has been a good loyal dog and we are trying to make his last months or year as happy and loved as possible.

@Liberti I am glad he is at peace and no longer suffering. Does that mean that he has gone over the rainbow bridge?

Wow ! Great ! I liked the way your pet he enjoys his life! As an ardent dog lover and as a Vet I appreciate your efforts anf feeling towards the dog of yours! I too had a dog who passed away when he was almost 16. We also used to provide him all possible amenities like you people are providing to keep him happy! Thanks dear friend @Liberti for initiating a nice discussion!
