Valentine's Preview

Today we are going to have "Valentine's Day" together. We will be going to a factory store for Russel Stover's chocolate, and then on to the historic Brookeville Hotel for family style fried chicken and sides. It is actually a new replica of the historic Kansas hotel, as it has moved from Brookeville, Ks. to Abilene, Ks. The menu is still the same. Fried Chicken, old family recipe of Coleslaw, relishes, sides and all still one price. I should be back this afternoon and post some more. There are very few places that serve fried chicken any more. It is usually nuggets, or planks or strips of chicken breast meat, but this place serves the real deal. I was craving fried chicken last night. This is something I do not cook well at home.

Yes, and I brought home chocolate, of course, but also leftovers from our very nice meal. Each person is given half a chicken, in pieces, of course.

I hope you enjoy your day together. How is the weather in Kansas today? It is over cast and rainy here in North Carolina. I love russel stover chocolates!

Over cast, cold, misting ice. It is fun to go to this factory store, smells heavenly when you walk in.

@GardenGerty We are getting warmer here. It's been rainy, but it's not cold enough to turn to ice. I bet it does smell very heavenly, and very tempting!

I would like to have a good fried chicken, it is not something I can find in a restaurant here.

The owner of this place comes and sits and talks with everyone. I told him I do not fry chicken well at home, and he laughed and said it is very messy to do. I am not sure why restaurants do not make this often anymore.

@GardenGerty Fried chicken is not something you will find in Europe, unless there is a KFC in the area. We have none in Switzerland.

I want to find a place that fixes fried chicken like homestyle. I'm about 1 1/2 hours from Portland and heard they have a place there where everyone sits at the table together. I'll have to look it up. I love Russel Stovers candy.

That sounds wonderful! What do they serve as relishes? If you're ever near Romeoville, IL, I highly recommend going to White Fence Farm and ordering their chicken. All of the dinners are served with bean salad, cole slaw, cottage cheese, pickled beets, the best corn fritters I've ever had in my entire life, and choice of potato with a chicken gravy.

I will write down the recommendation. The relishes depend on the time of year and what is in stock. Yesterday it was bread and butter pickles and pickled peaches. I have had pickled carrots and other veggies as well. Always cole slaw, creamed corn,(which is not our favorite, but is traditional). There were homemade biscuits with butter and strawberry jam. Mashed potatoes, cream gravy and cottage cheese, too. Since we brought home leftovers, the corn went into the soup pot here.

@GardenGerty Now I'm hungry again! I just realized that when we stopped in Joliet, IL during our cross-country road trip in 2016, we were just 10 miles from White Fence Farm. We could have stopped by to have lunch! No one else besides me in my family has been there before.

I did have a lovely time. Although this is a "family friendly" restaurant, children are expected to behave and do. Adults make conversation and people do not spend all their time on electronics. We walked in at 12:20, and were seated immediately, and had hot, fresh food by 12:30. No one rushed us out and it was just nice all the way around.

The food was very good. It is a little drive from here, but that is okay. We talk when we drive places. Or I nap.

Fried chicken is a childhood favorite of mine and it still is. So, you already have an early Valentine's date. How was the food? We have yet to tell about the foods to be served on my Valentine's day with my hubby together with his brother and wife and her 82-year old widowed auntie. It will be an acoustic Valentine's dinner at a posh hotel.

We have done this before at these two places. It is a pleasant place to eat with no distracting noise or disruption. Good service, and good food.
