This Chimp Really Had a Good Arm!

Santino, a chimpanzee, has been held captive in a zoo in Furuvik, Sweden, for a very long time. Santino was a very temperamental chimp when agitated. Santino collected rocks and small pieces of concrete in the wee hours of the morning, before the zoo patrons arrived, and he hid those rocks and pieces of concrete under piles of hay. Those piles of hay covering Santino's collection of rocks and concrete pieces were always placed quite close to the zoo's visitor center. Wink, wink, nod, nod, say no more! When zoo patrons made their way to Ape Island to gawk at the chimpanzees, Santino started hurling rocks at the humans who had come to stare. If I had people gawking at me, day in and day out, I would hurl rocks at them too!!! To stop Santino from his throwing-rocks-at-humans activity, Santino was castrated to decrease his hormone levels. Poor fellow. Apparently, Santino is less agitated these days.
A chimp at a Swedish zoo has made a scientific discovery after throwing rocks at his cage-mates.

Isn't it a shame how we've treated these animals that they react like that? And no.........I don't blame them for it.

I hope he had a good aim. I would try to discourage humans from staring at me too.

Although it might hurt more I would rather be hit by a rock then a dung ball as gorillas will do.

@Corbin5 neither do I, it is like birds, I hate see them in cages where they can't even open their winds. It is so sad.

He was only doing what he thought right really. I would not want people to go and stare at me either. He has such a loving face and I am sure he was only trying to scare them a bit.

@Corbin5 He might have thought that they would hurt him so he defended himself one smart chimp though he had a right to look out for himself. Too much stress of being in a cage all day long I guess.

Oh no - I would hurl rocks at those who decided to castrate him! Surely there could have been a better way to stop this behavior !

Yes, fully agree with you dear @Corbin5, but otherwise if once they come to know that people are scared of him then he would turn more violent ....so this is the way he had to made mild in his nature or behaviour! Thanks!

He needs to be in the wild. Most captive animals do not do well in zoos.
