How many characters are too many characters to introduce into a book?

I am reading a Kindle book now, that is constantly introducing new characters to the reader. I mean there must be at least 15 in it now. I am having trouble keeping everyone, and everyone's name straight. Part of this is my own fault, for not reading the book consistently, but even though I initially found it interesting..I lost interest in it, when it got kind of slow. Now, it is a little better, but these characters are going to drive me batty. How many characters do you think should be introduced into a book or novel?

It can be difficult at times to keep track of the characters but 15 sounds like plenty. Hopefully as you get into the book more they will sort themselves out.

@JudyEv We've already just added a pregnant girlfriend and her parents to the mix! I'd like to know what their relevance to the plot is, other than confusion! OK the progtagonist is stressed with all these life events..we get it!

I wonder if there is a limit on that. Fifteen seems like a lot of characters. But then again, I've been reading a book by Cassandra Clare in the Dark Artifices Series and there are probably more than 15 characters in there.

@snowy22315 LOL she just might give you more characters to keep up with. You may need to start writing them down.

My first novel had a lot of characters but they were separated into their own different stories. They were introduced at the beginning though. Just tell me it's not my book you're reading and lost interest in. LOL

lol, I don;t think so, this is a UK author. I may have to employ some kind of pneumonic device to keep them all straight. I just want to read and be passively entertained not have to do a story web..with the characters in it.

If they enter in more than 12 characters, they lose me all together. It's hard to keep those personalities and figures straight, in my mind's eye. So I lose interest and stop reading the book.

Yes, it is hard to remember who goes with who, and who did what when. Plus the storyline gets lost with the distraction of too many perhipheral characters.

Basically, there is no limit to how many characters there can be in one book. It's totally up to the writer how the book is written. But, writers are people too. Unless the characters being introduced is in context with the book, then it's going with the flow of the book which is most likely the idea of the book introducing many characters. Like good stories we watch and enjoy on tv, it has constant characters you get to know and the story is built around, is the same as a good book. You can check here too about characters in a book:
Characters are the heart of a story and the feature which sticks longest in the reader’s mind. But how many characters does your novel need?

I think a smart writer will not overwhelm a reader with too many characters.!
