In 1999 when Brookeville Restaurant moved from Brookeville, Ks to Abilene, Ks. they took everything that was not nailed down, and some of it that was. That is what their promotional blog says. My image is a tin ceiling in the room where we ate. I do not know if it was an antique or a reproduction. I had been to the original restaurant and hotel, built in 1870, and hubby and I enjoy the replica as well. They moved from their original location to the present one for several reasons. I had only heard about the one about the sewer, but that was not the only reason they moved. So here's the scoop, briefly: 1. Brookeville, Ks. did not have a municipat sewer system. The hotel owners spent $2000 to $3000 per month pumping and hauling waste away from their restaurant. 2. The Martins, who owned and operated the restaurant lost their only daughter as a result of a medical procedure gone wrong. She had worked along side them and there were too many memories of her there. It made them keep on missing her. 3. The wife survived a serious issue with cancer, and was needing to start fresh, in a fresh location. 4. The new location was in a more heavily traveled area, very close to a major east-west interstate highway. To maintain the authenticity of the home style restaurant and it's charm, they took as much of the old building as they could. Including the Blue Willow dishware that most of their food is served on.

It has been a few years now and they are just as well known or more so. The mom has also written a book called "Love Never Ends".

A person they did not even know donated 5 acres for the restaurant. I imagine he was convinced it would be good for the area.

What a beautiful ceiling! It's sad what they went through, but it's great they kept their dream alive and kept moving forward. Did they take things that were original to the building itself?

That is what I understand. Before the original building was a hotel, it was a bank. One of their dining rooms has always been called the bank room. A smaller room is the vault room. Elegant reproduction wall papers.

@GardenGerty Heather, it makes sense why they closed the restaurant and moved to somewhere else.

Yes, the new venue is very successful. Some truckers make it their regular stop, and many people make it a date destination or a fun day trip.

I know that they have a good business that continues to grow. I find myself wondering what they will do with it when it is time to retire.

It is sad. It goes to show that even successful people can face hardships and that we can persevere.
