My Introduction to the Longarm Quilt Machine

Some Mylotters were aware that I had a date with Lolah on Valentine's Day. Lolah is a Longarm quilt machine. My sweetheart paid for me to use the machine for an entire day! Early yesterday morning I gathered my quilt front and back and drove the 10 km (6 miles) to the local quilt shop. One of the assistants loaded my quilt back, the batting I had selected and then my quilt front onto the machine. That process took almost 45 minutes....the pantograph (quilting pattern) was set in place....the machine was threaded and we were ready to start. The first fifteen minutes the assistant stood over me every second....making sure I was comfortable and giving me some tips. She also searched out and removed any loose threads from the face of the quilt. After a while she would let e proceed on my own for a few minutes at a time. By lunch time I had an entire quilt quilted....ready to be bound (finishing the edges) and autographed.....wow! A break for lunch, and then on to the second quilt!

@rebelann The march 1 date was booked the same time as the February 14 date. I had the option to cancel March 1 if it didn't work out for me.... I will look to see if there are any other dates available in 2018....I'm flexible so there is a chance they can find another date. Maybe I am addicted.

Is a quilting machine different from a regular sewing machine?I'm interested to learn how to quilt but I know how to sew.Can you share some steps how to quilt.

The Longarm quilting machine is just used for the quilting....a mid arm machine is often used for both.

Wow, that really sounds like some high tech machinery there to get the job done. But it sounds like its fast and hopefully very effective, leaving good and strong stitches.

How cool is that? If you couldn't use this particular machines, what was the alternative? Or did you make the quilts knowing you could use this machine?

I would have hand quilted those quilts....they might have been finished by June or September.
