As a kid, I didn't like my name. I do now. It fits me. I liked Pam or Pamela growing up.

@amadeo I looked Valerie up in the baby book one year and found it means bold and valor. I can live with that.

My name is Marie-Luise. When I was a child, my mother saw to it that it wasn't changed into anything else. When I was ten years old, a classmate shortened it to Malu, the first two letters of the two names combined. I didn't know then that many Marie-Luises are called Malu. Malu became my name for friends. Relatives still call me Marie-Luise. I couldn't use Malu as my username on online sites because four letters are not enough. I added an 's' because my surname starts with an 's'. But I didn't want to use it as my username because 'malus' means 'bad' in Latin. Not, that I expect anyone here to know Latin. Anyway, I added an 'e' and got 'Maluse' which is funny for elderly Germans. Not that there are any here, not even young ones. I'm the only one who finds it amusing, but that is the main thing, isn't it? :-)

@amadeo Only my husband calls me, Di. I had a vanity plate with my husband's name and Di, until some guys called me by my name from their car. Of course I didn't know them, so my husband removed that plate as fast as humanly possible.
