Chinese New Year Celebration

Philippines

It's my first time to experience Chinese New Year celebration in Vietnam. I used to celebrate it with my Chinese friends in my country and I must say it's a bit different. The fireworks display was not that grand, it only lasted for a few minutes, or maybe in the place where I am currently staying. Stores will be closed for 3 days which means you must look for a convenience store to buy food or over-the-counter meds. The streets are not that lively in the evenings, unlike the regular days where people can be seen on the streets. The roads are not busy and you can seldom see people outside. I suddenly miss celebrating Chinese New Year at home. I feel homesick and I want to go home. If not because of my husband who's been very supportive and understanding, I would have long gone to the airport to book a flight ticket back home. Have you experienced celebrating Chinese New Year, too?

why are the streets empty? do the vietnamese go out of town during chinese new year? so you're working in vietnam, while your husband is here in manila?

Some of the locals went to the Southern side of the country, where their hometowns are located. Some of them are staying inside their houses with their family and relatives. The shops are closed, and the streets are not busy, unlike most days. We are here in Hanoi, Vietnam. Both of us.

@hereandthere I love tikoy! I haven't seen any tikoy being sold here in any grocery stores. Their malls here are closed for 3 days, which makes it even more boring.

It is obviously quite an occasion, when done the right way!

They have different way to celebrate it. It's just me who's not accustomed to their way of celebrating it. Hopefully I will get used to it. :-) Thank you for the comment.
