Do You Like Your Meals Plain or Fancy?

One of my Typical Lunch or Dinner Meals

In my last post, http://www.mylot.com/post/3156214/i-cant-believe-how-easy-it-is-to-pass-by-the-sweets-now, I talked about my efforts to eat healthier meals. I am making so much progress that foods I used to crave don't have the same power over me as they used to. I am learning to enjoy and be content with foods that are as close as possible to their natural condition, allowing for applying heat to cook some of them. The photo shows a typical lunch I might eat, with some variation in the type of fruit or vegetables. I am happy with this. And I don't feel guilty about eating it. It's also very easy to prepare. For breakfast I might have a hard-boiled egg, some almonds, a tangerine, and maybe some toast or a half avocado. Or I might have my power breakfast -- rolled oats, chopped walnuts and apples, and blueberries, topped with cinnamon and Xylitol (a sweetner that's good for your teeth), and goat milk. I eat it cold and it's really quite good. In really cold weather I might have hot oatmeal. Or scrambled eggs. I don't eat a separate lunch and dinner. I eat my main meal in the late afternoon most of the time, since I usually eat my breakfast in late morning. I normally have homemade soup, salad, the meal you saw above, or, on Sundays, a hot meal with baked salmon, broccoli, some form of sweet potatoes, and brown rice. I usually add a tangerine for me. Sometimes I make a pot roast. When we watch TV, the commercials often show some very fancy foods being served in restaurants, resorts, and on cruise ships. Many of them are considered gourmet foods. For some reason those don't even look good to me. I'm sure I wouldn't starve on a cruise because I know I'd find something I like, but it probably wouldn't be the exotic foods. I do miss eating my favorite pasta dishes, and sometimes I do make them. I do like meat and fish in some forms. I'm not as wild about lots of sauces and exotic seafoods. I'll skip the bisque, thank you. Many of the recipes I see on blogs leave me cold. I guess my taste buds aren't a fancy as most people's are. I do like pizza, but don't eat it often anymore because I know its not good for me. I learned to like Cantonese food when I was three years old and my parents took me to a Chinese restaurant in Sacramento. They were amazed when I actually loved the food. I still do, but don't often eat it anymore because it takes so much time to chop everything up. I still stir fry, though, when the foods I have on hand seem to call for it. How about you? Do you like your food plain or fancy? Or do you like both? Does it depend on the occasion or on who does the cooking? If you had a personal chef and cost didn't make a difference, what would your favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner be? What are your favorite foods? Have your tastes changed over the years?

I don't like fancy foods at all. Meat and fish mustn't have any sauces on them, or I won't touch them. My family say I'm the pickiest eater they know.

@bagarad I'm afraid I still like (and eat) too many sweet things.

I definitely eat things that are "fancier" than what you eat but I wouldn't consider them to be super-fancy. I love cooking and have a lot of time to do so, so I don't mind using complicated recipes.

I used to do some that were complicated, but they weren't too adventurous. I would make my own pasta sauces and make my own lasagna and bake my own bread, etc. I still make most of my own soups but i cheat and used canned broth. I used to make a lot of casseroles when I had kids, and we all liked them. I even made my own pizza sometimes. I've always preferred baking to cooking, though.

@NJChicaa WE don't eat bread as much, and Hubby only eats a certain brand of gluten-free bread he likes.

@bagarad I always make pasta sauce and lasagna. That's a given. I used to bake my own bread often but we just don't really eat bread any longer so I've stopped. I don't buy it either.

I've always been a fairly picky eater. I can't tolerate anything spicy or fermented or pickled.

My tastes are also changing as I get older. I'm tending more away from fancy to plain food.

I like something that is quick to make as I am often really hungry when it comes to meal times. I am am more likely to eat something fancy if I go out to eat. I must say your picture does look healthy and appetising and is making my mouth water. I expect it was quick to put together too.

@bagarad Yes the same for me and I think more about what I am putting in my body. I eat far less junk than when I was a teenager.

My tastes are getting simpler as I age. I'm glad there are some convenience foods like the pre-grilled chicken, that are not full of additives and remain healthy.

I would rather have plain food over fancy any day of the week, your lunch doesn't look bad either.

I don't really mind but plain and simple is my preference. And if I have to get a meal the simpler the better. By contrast, Vince loves spending all day in the kitchen cooking up a storm.

So you have your own personal chef. My husband can make tea or coffee and and heat up food I've already cooked. I know he could also do some of the prep like frying his own meat patties and boiling his own eggs, but he doesn't as long as I will.

I guess for me it depends on how I feel and what I feel like eating. For breakfast during the week I usually eat cereal with bananas, hot chocolate and some chocolate spread and some peanut butter on a spoon. For lunch I have left overs and when they are done I have to figure out what to eat if want to eat.

That's how I ate when I was younger. now I'm paying the price. It's insidious, since we don't feel the effects of a poor diet (unhealthy fats, sweets, sodas, etc) at the time we are eating them. We feel the effects when we are over 65 and we get weak bones, arthritis, heart problems, strokes, etc.) I know this by experience. I'm not saying your diet is unhealthy, because I don't know what else you feel like eating.

I guess a lot of what I cook would be called fancy. I make salmon chowder, lobster bisque and some other things that I lot of people would say were fancy. But I cook everything. From venison stew to sushi.

At least if you cook it yourself you know what's in it and it's not loaded with unhealthy food additives -- unless you make it with processed foods and packed mixes. It sounds like you cook from scratch, though.

About the fanciest meals I have are the ones at a Sushi restaurant that the knitting group and I go to once every 3 or 4 months. I don't like to cook so I don't prepare any fancy meals here at home.
