One thing no one has ever accused me of doing here on myLot, or at the B-place, or at Persona Paper, is using a lot of songs that "everybody" knows. In fact, the most frequent comment I get is "never heard of him/her/them." I have a wall in my office room plastered with those comments. It's not like I'm trying to be contrary. I'm really not. I just like music that's not exactly mainstream. So I decided I'd go through the Whitburns and look at songs that have been #1. I picked favorites from each year for the first 25 years of my life. Therefore, if you haven't ever heard of these, at least it isn't my fault! Now, I will cut you some slack on the country favorites. Given that I was raised on country music, I tell people that the song that was #1 when I was born was "He'll Have to Go," not the song that was #1 on the pop charts (which was Percy Faith's "Theme From A Summer Place"). And, given that I have the country Whitburn (my first Whitburn was the country hits 1944-1993), you're going to be subjected to that as well. Ready to rock and roll? You may not be after you see the first #1 pop hit on the list. Hope you enjoy this. Here's a song that was #1 the year before I was born:
The Andy Williams Show In my humble opinion, the best filmed performance of Mack.
