Do you know your hurricane from your tornado?

I’ve always wondered what the difference is between hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones and tornadoes. Thanks to Deborah K. Mitchell’s (@Corbin5) very useful link I’m now much more knowledgeable about these marvels of nature. It seems the terms cyclone, typhoon and hurricane are interchangeable but a tornado has some peculiarities of its own. However the terms are sometimes used in the wrong context which doesn’t help anybody. For the purposes of this discussion I’ll just use the terms hurricane and tornado. The basic difference, it seems, is that hurricanes occur over water and tornados over land. This explains why Australia has few tornadoes although they do occur. The north-west coast of Western Australia experiences several hurricanes every summer. These develop off the coast but usually don’t penetrate too far inland before becoming rain-bearing depressions. Both hurricanes and tornadoes exhibit violently rotating columns of air, cyclones do not develop into the funnel clouds so characteristic of tornadoes. Hurricanes can stretch for several hundred miles and last for hours or even several days whereas tornadoes are usually restricted to a few miles in width and last for a much shorter period. Fierce and intense damage can be caused in the path of a tornado while the longer battering of a hurricane may cause a different type of destruction. The other factor I discovered is that hurricanes, once they reach land, MAY develop into tornadoes but the reverse does not occur. Having said that, the hurricanes in the north of our state never seem to develop into tornadoes. The photo shows a wintry sky over our house. Luckily it wasn't the forerunner of a cyclone, hurricane, typhoon or tornado!

I know that a hurricane can "create" a tornado, not turn into a tornado.

@JudyEv I have seen small tornadoes forming on the lakes. They look scary, they can cause minor damages. Last year it happened in Lugano.

Living 100 miles from the North Atlantic coast, we've had many hurricanes. Never used to have tornadoes, but have more now. We considered building a storm cellar, but never did. My husband grew up in Arkansas and everyone there has storm cellars.

@JudyEv My MIL and her husband were such hard workers having lived through the Great Depression in the 30's and saved everything, but seldom enjoyed it. I really hated to see all that food go to waste, but it was just too old.

I always thought I'd want a storm cellar but then I started worrying about what would happen if something fell across the door. But I guess people check out each other's cellars to make sure they're safe.

@1creekgirl I've seen advice and lists of what to store in case of need but there is a limit to how long you can safely keep stuff - as you found out. I sometimes wonder about the benefit in stocking up too much.

I do know the difference between a hurricane and a tornado. Fortunatly where I live we rarely get either. Never a hurricane but a small tornado once were 20 years or so. I'm on a hill so tornados do not hit up here they go along the flat down he road or across town along the river.

gorgeous photo! i've been'n a hurricane down'n florida many years 'go, but've much more 'xperience with tornadoes. all's i can say's 't least with hurricanes folks get more warnin' to seek shelter although the predictions fer tornadoes 've greatly improved. most folks still only get a 5-10 minute window 'f warnin' coz some're prone to jest pop outta no place. thanks fer all the info :)

@JudyEv Well I can say it is important to know what is coming at you and from what you have to run and hide There are no such things here in Latvia so when I do make my move back to the states I will need a re-education depending on where I settle and right now it looks like it might be northern Florida.

It's good to know the difference. Even though they can both be the same, just depending on where they are, determines what to call them.

@nitirrbb7 If we get to the stage where we can't drive we would have to leave here. Doctors, hospitals, shops, specialists are all at least 7kms away and most are 30kms. I think the maintenance will get too much for us eventually too. We will need something smaller and closer to the various services we'll need.
