Do You Have a Middle Name?

United States
February 21, 2018 11:08am CST
Don't know why this popped into my head today but I was wondering how many people have a middle name. Do more people have one or don't have one? My middle name is Anne and when my mom was mad at me she would call me by both first and middle name (Marilyn Anne) and I knew I was in big trouble. My children all have middle names but my x-husband didn't have one. All my grandchildren have middle names too. Since my family loved to name things (including cars) it might seen unusual that both our dogs have middle names too. Gizmo is Gizmo Godfrey and Mush is Mush Marie So that's my thoughts today. As you can see not much is rattling around in my head today

in the philippines, middle name means your mother's maiden name/family name. so if your mother's last name was marasigan before marrying your father, whose last name is carandang. your first/middle/last name will be in this order, for example, eloisa marasigan carandang.

@Betxie1221 middle name in other countries mean second name to us. for example, eloisa elena marasigan carandang. first name/given name is eloisa, second name is elena, middle name is marasigan, surname/family name/last name is carandang. if eloisa elena marries someone surnamed paterno, her new middle name will be carandang, surname paterno, so eloisa elena carandang paterno is her new complete/official full name.

Having middle names or not depends very much on the customs of the country where you live. Speaking for Germany, I can say that middle names are very rare.

My x-husband was German and he didn't have a middle name nor did his siblings. My mom's name was Mary Louise

@garymarsh6 Oh, no. This is not my name. My name is Marie-Luise. This is one name, Luise (no 'o') is not the middle name.

My name is Amber Myree. Myree is pronounced like you would say Marie. Apparently, Myree, spelled that way, is a name that goes back a couple of generations on my dad's side. It was his mother's middle name as well. As far as I know, everyone in my family has a middle name. I always thought my dad's middle name was unusual: Fray.

@Marilynda1225 I asked my grandmother how she decided to give my dad that middle name. She said there was a visiting preacher that she and my grandfather admired, and she figured it was just as good as any (My dad was their 15th child, so maybe they needed inspiration).

I like the spelling of you middle name Myree. It's different. Yes, I don't think I've ever heard of your dads middle name Fray before.

I've run into both actual or given names and middle names that are unusual. One of the places where my mom resided a few years ago had a lady with a name similar to your dad's middle name. I can't remember exactly it was though. It may have been Foy, which I considered odd for a women's name too.

My actual first name is Julia Anne, but I often use Anne as my middle name. But it is actually Clarissa, I was "blessed" with 3 names. My family usually calls me Julie Anne, but I usually just either go by Julia or Julie.

@Marilynda1225 Love that name, and spelt with the "e" is best! My Dad always had a way of slowing pronouncing each and every name of mine when he wanted my or anyone who was within earshot's attention. I loved that about him. And of course he choose my names.

I like to tell the story that we were so poor that we could only afford one name and so I have no middle name. Anne is a nice name. I have two cousins and a few friends with that name.

@MarshaMusselman I really don't know why I only have one name. Maybe it is not the custom where I lived to give more than one name. Why do they give a middle name? I never thought about it. Both my daughters have a middle name. Maybe it is a custom only in some places.

That's pretty funny, Felix, on the reasoning behind only one name. Course, one never knows it could be that somewhere some culture/country might charge more to have more than one name recorded.

All my family and relatives have middle names. Here in the south, people are often called by both first and middle names. Never thought about giving our pets middle names, though.

That is hilarious that your dogs have middle names and they are adorable! We all have middle names in our family. My brother names his cars, and Benny Benz is waiting here for him to return.

@Marilynda1225 You don't see too many with three. Was one (or two) sort of 'family' names handed down from generation to generation?
