Are you bold or are you a mouse?

I admit it. I am a mouse. I am not a speedster when I drive on ice. No thank you. The roads were sweet and clear this morning. This afternoon the skies turned ucky gray. Then I look out the window.... white. Snow. I walked out to check on the hens. Slippery. I had the afternoon-evening drive in to get hubby. I cleared the car off, crept down the driveway. Got out to walk across the road to get the mail and check out the road surface. It didn't look terrible. OH no. Ice. I wish I'd brought the dragon cane. I made it but knew that I would NOT break speed limits on going to get hubby. I drove 20 mph on my little road. Others zipped around me. If my feet slip on a surface, my little car sure would. I then drove about 30 on the main drag. I slowed down further to head into the parking lot and yup, car made unhappy noises as the studded tires grabbed the road best they could. Sun was almost down when I slowly steered us into the driveway. Out here that is a huge deal cause there are no lights except for car lights. I was grateful for the bit of twilight. So I am not a bold driver. I just can not understand those who roar around on ice. I really do not have that confidence in the vehicle. Maybe its a character flaw.

I think it is more likely to be a strong survival instinct than a character flaw. Good for you for taking such good care of you both.

Being a native Floridian, I wouldn't have the faintest idea of what to do on an icy road. I'd probably be like you and drive cautiously at 20 mph. I hope I wouldn't be dumb enough to try and drive the regular speed limit, because with my inexperience on ice I would surely cause an accident!

@sallypup Doesn't everybody put special tires on their cars for the winter to make it easier to drive in snow and ice?

@moffittjc Sane folks do. I've got studded tires on my car. Its a little car but pretty tough. But there is only so much grab when it comes to ice.

@moffittjc Caution is the best idea. I just saw a posting on Facebook that made me want to cry. A lady lost her sister cause of ice and the lady was only driving 40 mph, trying her best to be cautious. Ice is such a hard thing to deal with.

When my daughter lived in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont, she tried to get me to move up there. The roads were always covered with ice and snow. One November I drove up to do a craft show. I encountered a snow squall. I drove less than 20 mph and it felt like I was creeping along. Then a car sped by me going at least 40 and it scared the crap out of me.

I do not like to drive at all when there is ice on the roads.

I can be both bold or a mouse in different situations. I'm lucky I rarely have to drive on ice here.

@sallypup tourists do seem to love coming here. We probably take much of it for granted. But yes, there are some lovely places. Something for everyone. What places did you look at?

I avoid driving on ice and snow whenever possible, even though my RAV4 has all wheel drive.

@JamesHxstatic I love it. Oh, by the way, I've done it AGAIN. Spotted a little house that sits on a half acre in Albany. Pretty smack on the price that we need, too. Not a fancy house but good enough and a separate garage, too.

When it comes to driving in general..I am fairly cautious, although I do admit to speeding.

luckily snow is something we would never have to put up with except for occasional hail or storms. but in general, i am a nervous driver so would always take the safer ways of things

@Theresaaiza The temperatures were just cold enough that ice formed on the road. That is what I am afraid of- that ice.

I'm a defensive driver. But I'm becoming bolder in some other areas.

@andriaperry Perhaps I am money hungry more than bold. I could have called for a cab but that is money gobbled up.
