Gross post #2: Are we all really oozing dirt, sweat and oil all day?

For years, I've been soaking speaker grille cloths in my Special Secret Formula (Oxyclean and dish soap) to clean them up. The results are pretty amazing: An overnight soak can remove 45 years worth of cigarette and marijuana smoke, pollution, water damage, and who knows what else. On a whim, I decided to soak my white t-shirts (before doing my laundry) to see how non-white they really were. I used my Special Secret Formula and warm water, and let them soak overnight in my kitchen sink. Some had a touch of "ring around the collar," but none were particularly soiled. I tossed a grey one in too, for good measure. What I found in the morning was a bit of a surprise: the water was dark grey. "We humans are pretty disgusting," I thought. I decided to rinse the t-shirts and soak them again. More dark grey water. The photo is of the t-shirts after my THIRD soaking. The humanity of it all! Are we all really that gross, with dirt and sweat and oil oozing from our pores as we go about our daily business? The t-shirts DID look whiter when my experiment was done, and the ring around the collar was gone. Do you soak some clothes before you wash them? I'm going to keep doing this periodically. It's kind of pleasurable, like vacuuming.

I don't wear white t-shirts. I don't find vacuuming especially pleasurable.

I will stop by and vacuum for you. I will tell you jokes the whole time. I will bring my Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, so I can watch the dust bunnies swirl around and around...and around and around...oh dear, I'm lapsing into a happy dream.

It sounds like a good way to whiten your shirts.

Yeppers. I think I was inspired when I got a new white t-shirt at a gig, put it in my white t-shirt drawer, and noticed that it looked very different from the other t-shirts in there.

Ever tried a squirt of liquid soap and a shot of Oxyclean in really hot water for cleaning the stain inside your teapot or coffee pot?

@TheHorse Well, I have cheated and added a good sprinkle of the powder you might use in the dishwasher to the teapot, then fill to the brim with hot water from the kettle, put the lid on and leave it to percolate for 15minutes or so. I have also used a squirt of green liquid dish soap and a dollop of liquid bleach in the pot full of hot water for 15mins to the same effect, so long as it is not an aluminium pot (the chlorine eats holes in the aluminium!).

@TheHorse - A couple. I figure I'm just going to wear them again as soon as they dry.

@spiderdust Any dish soap seems to work when we make bubbles for our kids. At home, I'm a sucker for anything that says "lemon" or "lime."

@TheHorse I'm going to have to buy some dish soap soon, as my stash of discount/bought for cheap with coupons dish soap is nearly gone. I think all I have left (other than the bottle of Palmolive that's open) is a big jug of Smart & Final's house brand version of blue Dawn, and I got that to make bubble solution for a birthday party.

I soak my clothes before washing them, but I never saw the water coming out of that color. When I wash my curtains once a year it looks like this.

Buwaahaahaa! I do the spot remover thing too. But my white t-shirts turned out not to be white at all! After soaking, they're closer.

I haven't soaked any laundry before washing for some time but yes, there have been times I have soaked white clothes before washing because then they come out brilliant white.

Is there anything similar to "Oxyclean" in India?

@TheHorse I'm sure there's some kind of oxygen bleach there. OxyBright is an overseas brand.
