Good News: Survival On The Atlantic

A Bahamian man survives 16 days in the Atlantic Ocean after his 21 ft angler boat ran out of gas while sailing form Bimini to Nassau. He was caught in rough seas and drifted along hoping for someone to discover him. He survived on potato chips, cookies, and bottled water he had aboard for 12 days. His luck took a turn for the worse when a 40 foot wave hit his boat and dumped all his supplies overboard. It looked pretty hopeless until finally he was spotted by another boater off the coast of West Palm Beach and his location was reported to the Coast Guard. Although low on electrolytes he was expected to make a full recovery. I found this piece of good news while visiting Florida and reading the local News Press paper there. Have you ever had a close call in the water? Source- News Press, Fort Myers, Florida

It is great he survived. I guess the closest call I ever had in the water was when I was a little kid, I was playing in a swimming hole with a small intertube. I had it around my waist..it was a very small one..I got my hands stuck in it and could not free them. I was bobbing up and down like a cork, because I couldn't stand up. I bobbed up once long enough to yell help. My dad was on the bank so he came over and fished me out!

Embarrassing but at least you had someone nearby. I got swept out in the Ocean once. Very scary due to the undertow. I really thought I was going to drown, but somehow I managed to make it to shore.

I am happy that he survived. I was just a baby when my mother and I got caught in a storm when traveling in an open boat. The boatman was a veteran in his field so he got us safely to land - but my mom told me that I was blue , wet and shivering - yet I didn't get a fever or catch a cold.

That was certainly a scare! I am always bit on edge when in a boat since I am not a very good swimmer. Thank goodness you had someone with expertise.

Yes, I guess snacks, although mostly unhealthy, in this case were good to have around.

Yes, he was lucky. Other than exposure and dehydration he will be alright.
