the beast from the east

Never have I ever had such a cold thumb. I don't like the snow, but I don't mind it. We've had just a piddling amount in my neck of the woods, not enough to close educational establishments {grrr, *sigh*} but enough to make the side streets and pavements crunchy underfoot. No doubt my morning walk to Bus Stop will mostly involve me trying not to slip over. No, it's the cold which is irking me somewhat. I like the cold. I make no secret of that. But today the temperature has been no higher than a lowly -2 C° and on my walk from Bus Stop to Home at 6.30 this evening, the temperature felt like -6 to -8 C°. Tomorrow it is going to feel like -10 to -14 C°, according to the Met Office app on my phone. I actually cried when I got home, my thumb was in that much pain. And I do have a fairly high tolerance to pain. Yes, I was wearing gloves. You may laugh. Oh, ho, ho, it's only a bit of cold and snow. Those British folks do like to create drama where none exists, oh, ho, ho. But I have never known it to feel so cold, and where I live in particular we still haven't had a decent amount of proper snow since 2012. We're not prepared for it. Tomorrow I shall wear two pairs of cosy gloves. I'm sure I have some whizzy magical handwarmers in the drawer ... I must dig them out too.

Poor @poppylicious My daughters are suffering in Edinburgh and Manchester but we are all toasty my part of Ireland. Belfast usually escapes what the rest must suffer - meteorologically speaking.

Ooh, yes. They have a red snow warning Edinburgh way, don't they? If it snows, I want it to snow properly, like that. It doesn't do that here {well, maybe twice in thirteen years}. The snow we have had is not picture worthy. The main roads are fairly clear. Ooh, but I see blue lights up ahead. Give me a minute ... Oh, just a little red car in the ditch. Must be a bit icy out there!

It was -10º C here yesterday morning, now we are lucky, -1º C and the reason is that it is snowing.

We have actually been quite lucky here. The really bad snow has skirted around us for some reason.

The media do like to use hyperbole when trying to create more drama than is required!

You have my sympathy, I also get very painful cold hands. Ever since I was a teenager I have worn fingerless gloves all winter, even indoors on cold days, and that makes all the difference. People look at me as if I was a Russian peasant or something, but who cares? To go outdoors I have put sheepskin mitts over the gloves and I'm toasty warm. It really transforms the situation from freezing and miserable to picturesque and jolly. I'm off for a walk to the shop in a minute.

@Poppylicious hope you manage to stay warmer today!

I have never thought to do that, except a few months ago at work, not for the cold but due to pain. I wish I'd read this before leaving home!

I walk less than a mile to work...but it has been taking me a lot longer these last couple of days as the pavements are slippy I don't have a winter coat so wear about 4 layers of clothing when I go to work at 6.30am...I think layers of clothing are better than a supposedly warm coat.

I've got four layers of clothing indoors! I'm toasty warm though!

As far as possible I walk on the roads if the pavements look like they m8ght want go make me land on my bottom. Layers are supposed to be better.

I really don't care for the cold one jot - hope your extra gloves make a good difference for you
