School closures during snowy conditions

The UK has snow at the moment. Although it's worse north of the country we have a slight covering where I live in the south west of England but because we are not used to these conditions we are never prepared. I'm sure other countries must find it amusing that we panic at a few flakes when they are knee deep in the white stuff. Yesterday my granddaughter came home with a letter telling us that her school might be closed today which I really can't believe as there isn't enough to make a snowball this morning. I can understand when it gets thick and people do not want to be cut off but it's quite laughable here. What happens where you are when it snows? Do they close your schools or is it business as usual?

@scarlet_woman yes it's like that here. I'm just waiting for the text to arrive saying it's shut today.

@LadyDuck My granddaughter's school closed early today and is closed tomorrow. It's not really heavy snow but some of the teachers who live in the nearby villages can't get in or out. We just aren't prepared for this kind of weather.

@LadyDuck I don't think I've ever seen a snow plough in my part of the country although Scotland and the north have them

@sprite1950 The snow plows start early in the morning to clean the roads. The little road that leads from our home to the main road is private and we have to clean it.

Yes, here in Canada where I live, when the roads are in terrible condition because of the snow, they do close the schools and cancel the school buses also.

@marlina It's quite bad here tonight and very windy causing blizzards. Makes me quite nervous as we're not used to it.

@aureliah Even though it was quite deep this time it thawed really quickly and only lasted about 3 days. Looking out of the window yesterday you wouldn't have known we had snow and the temperatures are quite mild. The last lot we had turned to ice and slush and was around for weeks but in my part of the country we don't get it often. Sometimes we can go years and not see any.

It is very rare when schools close but we can get storms where they have no choice as things get get really bad and dangerous, especially the ice storms.

@1hopefulman That must be scary. It isn't too bad here at the moment but they still close everything based on the forecast.

That is funny you say that I use to live in Tennessee and even for a light dusting of snow they close school because people freak out they don’t know how to drive in it.

@Tina30219 I don't like driving in snow. My partner drove my car tonight and he said the wheels were sliding. That would have scared me.

It's good that her school is closed because it's not easy to go to school in such extreme cold.

@sjvg1976 It's not that far for us but some of the teachers might not have been able to get home if they had come in as they lived a car journey away. My granddaughter doesn't care about cold. She's been playing in it all day today!

@sprite1950 yes that's the reason they decided roto close the school for a day. Also not all the student may not live nearby the school.

@JESSY3236 I hate the roads when we have snow. We don't have enough gritters here so they're often treacherous

It doesn't snow here, so I have no idea what they'd do! I'm sure everything would shut down, as there's just no infrastructure in place for dealing with that sort of thing. A few hours from here, they're getting ready to have 12 inches of snow! The town is not prepared at all.
