Most states have mandated drills for student safety. Two weeks ago we had a fire drill. We will have one a month until school is out. Today we have a state wide tornado drill. I am not sure if it is monthly or not. If so we will be doing that every month as well. When drills are only for our school or our district our principal tries to choose the most convenient times in our school day and days with good weather. That is why we had the fire drill on the day we did, the weather was gorgeous. For our tornado drill we evacuate to the basement of the Sports and Aquatic Building. It is across the street from our school. There are wrestling mats to kneel on. None of the huddling in the restrooms for the drill or the warning. For our fire drills we have routes out and away from the building and we all line up together. @LovingMyBabies posted about her neighbor having a fire. Does your family have emergency plans for those events?

I remember doing fire drills in school and hating it. We never did have tornado drills. But then we dont get them. So guess Thats why we didnt. No, we don't. We'd just find away out i guess.

Even as a child I worried about fires, cause my folks would fall asleep smoking, sleeping on the sofas. We did not have any plans. I just worried about everything.

@GardenGerty i never thought of them. My mom doesn't smoke and always made sure things were off. I worry about everything now, due to my anixety but still hardly about fires. Just check the oven is off 3x after use

@Courtlynn I was an anxious kid, and our family did not talk much

We have plans should there ever be a bushfire which threatens us.

In the seventies we had friends who lived near the mountains in California and the deserts. They knew what to take if they had to evacuate. Here for your homes they recommend you have a "go bag"

@GardenGerty I know one myLotter was organising 'go bags' as gifts for her family. We have our papers and photos - and a hard drive - in a place where we can just grab it and run should we need to.

I thought that fire drill is a primitive device for kindling fire, I suppose that in this case it is the test of emergency procedures in case of fire. We do not have tornadoes or extreme weather conditions. In case of fire we know which are our escapes to the outdoor.

You are correct, there is a primitive device called a "drill" that will create sparks which will light tinder and kindling. Heavy wind storms are a fact of life around here.

I've never been in a tornado drill. Being you're in tornado alley, I'm sure it's necessary. I've never had fire exit drills in my family.

The kids and I have discussed fire safety. We live on the second floor. While it isn't ideal, they'd jump out the window into the grass and bushes below

We never had one, but there is an escape ladder that hooks on a window to go down. I used to have a house with bedrooms on the second floor.
