Is MyLot too boundless?

United Kingdom
March 2, 2018 7:10pm CST
It seems that many people don't think MyLot is too restrictive, but hint the issue of the low-quality dialogue, between members, is caused by the members themselves responding in greater numbers to basic and mundane than any post with a hint of intellectual or learned content. So, is it possible to 'Up the anti' and have both meaningful and/or captivating posts and larger numbers of people joining in such conversations?

There have been exceptions, there have been a few meaningful discussions that got the popularity they deserved. However, there are things we can do to make this happen more often. By liking and commenting, the discussion has more chances to appear in the Hot/Top Rated sections. You can also suggest a discussion to your followers, obviously you can't suggest your own. Then that's how "democracy" works, the people decide what goes viral and what does not. We can't ignore the fact a mundane discussion is easier to read and engage with, compared to something that requires time and thought to be processed and responded to. In the end, myLot is about socialization, "treated" as a personal journal most of the time. It would be different if it was a café for intellectuals, it wouldn't be the myLot we all know about. It would be another site, I mean. But we can still make it what we want it to be. For instance, we can create tags for thoughtful matters or limit ourselves to follow those whose content is interesting and unique enough for our tastes.

We could title discussions with "Smart People Only" just to make people of all types come to visit. :D I would love to find intellectual minds here on the site. I know one person who I chat with here that fits that description. It's a nice, calm discussion without any emotions filtering in. It's nice. If this site was more of that, I'd come around more often.

@sabtraversa Maybe we should pose a quick question to test that they are? 1 + 1 = 10. a) True, b) False, c) It Depends. Explain the answer. (hint, there's no wrong answer here if you can explain it)

@OneOfMany I immediately thought: What's the second letter of the alphabet? a) b, b) a, c) d, d) c Why "there's no wrong answer if you can explain it" instead of "there's no correct answer unless you can explain it"? As a way to think outside the box?

I have always felt that mylot is a sort of party offline. I don´t talk to everyone at a big party. I walk from group to group until I discover people talking about things that interest me. I don´t expect people to change: they cannot. So I look for birds that have feathers like my own. Not even family is the same as us. We have to look for what we want here and there. Sometimes, even what seems a basic post is interesting for me is it is one from another part of the world. I then learn about what people from other countries think, do or eat.

@TheRamblingMan Another thing that works for me is to relate with other people by answering or commenting at their posts. Relations and interactions work both ways. If I don´t read any post but just stay with my own, I will not get to know other people and they won´t be interested in what I say. When I came to mylot there were a very big earthquake in my country (one of the 10 biggest in the world). Not many were interested. But no, a little tremor gets a worry from my friends. They know more about Chile and they worry about me

Yep, find the interesting and intriguing, works for me. Oh, and playing with people... their minds that is... (although physically, when its the right person, works too!)

The first thing I noticed about this site is that it is mainly banter. I think one of my most popular discussions was about what people like on their toast and I knew it would be because it's something that nearly everyone can reply to. If you are here for intellectual discussion you won't find a lot to interest you although there are a few people who write serious posts; as JJ says, you won't get much interaction on them. Despite all that I am enjoying the site this time round and there are some friendly people here. I generally flit back and forth and don't stay long but this time round I think I shall stick around for a while.

@TheRamblingMan Really! Small world. I don't actually live in Corsham, I live in Chippenham but for some reason MyLot placed me there. I look forward to seeing your posts.

It is a while since I have been to Corsham (ex RN - Royal Arthur) I may be here more often than in the past, but it will be in fits and starts as I have other commitments.

I tried intelligent posts years ago. They were ignored because people were lost by them. While some people are willing to engage, they quickly lose interest. A lot of people are here to figure out their lives, and are frustrated to the point where they just engage in the mundane and ordinary.

@TheRamblingMan I covered sustainability, how to reduce the cost of living at home, how to work on budgets, and investment strategies. Some of these posts were over on Bubblews, and are now gone, but I figured people would be interested, because it would improve their lives... but they just want stuff without working for it. It made me lose a little hope for the species. The economy only will do better if people learn how to spend less... rather than only striving to earn more while not knowing how to manage that money. First step is to become debt-free, then go from there. If one is full of debt, they don't essentially have money to begin with. I have lived in a way that I'm free of debt.

I guess it is a general reflection of our world and why it is the way it is. Just because the masses are larger by number it does not mean they are correct.

@OneOfMany If you have achieved that my hat's off to you. Circumstance does not allow all to do so. Though my own 'owings' are slim.

It is what it is. Unless you plan to recruit a new caliber of members or start writing many theses per week yourself, I don’t think the site will change.

Far too long in the tooth for theses. Playing mind games and laying down miss-direction is far more fun anyway :-)

Just because you think a topic isn't up to snuff, does not mean that's the popular opinion.

April, @thislittlepennyearnsn As has been said many times before, to entertain the masses one must pander to the lowest common denominator. This is a well accepted and recorded fact.

Perhaps you would be happier elsewhere? I don't mean you're not welcome but I do think you have misunderstood the philosophy of the site and the reason for it. One of the nicest things aboutMyLot is that it is open to anyone and that anyone can start a discussion. There is no pressure to be anyone other than yourself. This has meant for example great joy and occupation for a lady in advanced years who doesn't always make the greatest deal of sense, but many of us love her anyway and love to respond to her posts. What is so wonderful about myLot is that she can continue without anybody saying she has got to a point where she needs to stop. I'd also welcome someone with a learning disability which meant that they didn't always have the greatest ability to write in the way that most of us can. This is the place where people become equal and there are very few places like that in the world today. We do have serious discussions and we also have non-serious discussions. We tell each other things that affect us, things we have found out, things that puzzle us, and things that worry us, as well as the things that have given us joy. If I wanted to post about nuclear physics I could. If I wanted to post about paleontology I would. I wouldn't be censured for being too intellectual. On the other hand there are days when I just want to be really silly and it's great to come here. Even in the greatest of universities I think you will find that people have their silly moments among the deep debates. You will find shopkeepers who have degrees discussing the weather. It that way my lot resembles real life. Most of us are quite capable of being adult enough to make her own choices as to what we reply to. In the world, we interact with many different people and many different levels of discussion. In a day I discussed with those who can't talk on a deep level and those who can. What has been so good about this site and will continue to be so is the fact that I can on one day post about a serious accident and the effect it has on me or others, contribute a poem or story that I happen to have written, discuss the meaning of life and my faith with others, read a devotiona, discuss politics and make a contact who actually proved to be of use to my life in the wider world. I can also have a laugh and a joke which is why my cat sometimes makes an appearance. What you are trying to do is find something that this site was never meant for. If you want a serious discussion site, limited to only serious discussion, then set one up yourself. Most of the people here are quite happy with the way things are because they have made friendships and have a place to "discuss" in any way which takes their fancy at any time in the day without the normal rules and regulations of a "writing" site. I think your post shows that you have totally misunderstood what this site is about. By all means start an intellectual discussion if that's what you want and those who want that kind of discussion will probably join in with you. I may be one of them depending on how my mood takes me. You will not achieve any discussion by failing to interact with others. If you cannot find any posts to interact with then maybe you need another kind of site. The key here is INTERACTION. Please don't try and think that you are going to improve things by imposing your own standards upon a site which has brought joy and often a great deal of companionship to many to many. The intelligent way to deal with the post you don't wish to answer or don't approve of is to simply pass on by. That's what the rest of us do. If you want larger numbers for your post then you will need to engage with others. I think you'll find that by and large most people have something quite meaningful to say at times. One of the most important things to remember is that part of the guidelines are that we do not criticize others for the way they write their content. This is not the place to come if you want perfect grammar. As long as the post makes sense most of us are quite happy because we understand the philosophy of the site.

Thank you for your in-depth comment. @Jackalyn You are however mistaken on several accounts. It is not I who have "mistaken what this site is all about" for I imply nothing. Neither am I am "trying to find something this site was never meant for". Where and when did you decide I do? My first paragraph is merely reporting what the majority of people said too an earlier post. The second, a question, formed from the gist of the first statement. So, I ask you again, where do I make such comments and proposals as you suggest? Such misinterpretations can lead to unfavourable outcomes.

You can post whatever you like as long as follows the rules of myLot. The test of your posting will be the response that you get. If you get few responses, then you know that is not what the readers want to talk about. I have been there, trying to write quality posts and failing with them. My readers are more interested in animals or what my neighbors have been doing. So, I repeat. Write for the audience.
