The beginning of the month is always hectic here at Team Freak Headquarters, but I squeeze this stuff in when I can. We are at #6 in my countdown of my favorite songs with "life" in the title: "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John. As much as Elton John shows up in music discussions here on MyLot, you'd think he must be pretty good or something! So while Sir Elton making an appearance might not be a surprise, the background of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" might surprise some. In 1968, Elton John was distraught over his then-struggling career, as well as his upcoming marriage to girlfriend Linda Woodrow. Suicide was strongly considered by the singer, until his friend, blues singer Long John Baldry, stepped in and convinced Elton to drop the marriage and focus on his career. From the 1975 album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was an international hit in, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, charting in five total countries. I've linked to a solo live performance from 1976. Enjoy! (Suicide prevention info verified by Wikipedia)

Wow. Marriage should be a special time and make you happy, if he was that depressed over it - then he made the right choice by not getting married. (thought he was gay? Maybe he didn't know it at that point....)

Probably why he was so distressed. If I was gay, I would think that getting married to a woman might stress me out.

Its a very nice song and one of the many that I like sung by him. I love the one about Lady Diana that was so beautiful. I am so glad that he is still here to entertain us with his great songs.

That song was originally written about Marilyn Monroe.

@teamfreak16 I have just seen that it was rewritten that is right. I only just noticed a link about it how lovely. Really lovely lyrics.

@lovinangelsinstead21 - "Candle in the Wind" was released in the mid-80's. I used to play it on the radio.

@teamfreak16 me too, the music industry without the next 30 years of Elton John would be unthinkable

I didn't know, either. Very interesting. Glad "Sugar Bear" stepped in.

Wonderful I really love this song. I remember in my young days with all my personal life ups and downs whenever things took a turn for the worst I would be singing to myself - wishing someone would save my life tonight

That was a very good song and album! You can definitely feel his pain over deciding on marriage. In the end, it was best for both of them. Fun fact: Elton wrote the music to this tune while on a cruise.

@dgobucks226 - "Elton who? I've booked this time and I'm using it. Karaoke singers step on up!" I would have been honored to give him my time.

@teamfreak16 Yes, he wrote some of the album songs on the cruise ships piano. He had to share the piano with an opera singer who had booked most of the time on the instrument. So, he had to work quickly on putting the songs together when he could.
