What is the latest time for a 'goodmorning' greeting?

When should you say good morning? In England we are very aware of our manners and mortified when we don’t apply them. We are not bothered about good manners coming back the other way, here or aboard, as we have done our bit at that point. That’s all that matters. Brit’s don’t expect anything back in return. We are the world’s most tolerant people. The British sense of fairplay is our other strong trait and these things not unconnected. No, I’m talking about at that point after 12:00pm when we are supposed to say good afternoon. I tend to say good morning to people that require that pleasantry at any point before 1pm. It still feels like morning at that time. I say good afternoon after 1pm. It’s strange but my mornings don’t start until after lunch, the mid day meal. For my goodevenings you get those when it’s dark. In Great Britain in mid winter its dark by 4pm. Yes 4pm. After its dark you tuck your head in your collar and save the good evenings for later. That means, of course, good afternoons last from 1pm to 4pm. That is a short afternoon. Goodnight is when you head home to bed. In Italy, of course, they can just say Ciao to everything, especially their governments.

Ciao is a greeting Italians use when they meet someone and also when they leave. Strangely, only the second meaning, the synonym for Good Bye, has entered other languages.

Ciao is only among people you know. Now some not well mannered people say ciao to those they do not know. When it happens I ask "do we know each other?".

@LadyDuck In the city of Stuttgart is a cosmetics shop called 'Lush'. It's an international chain. The shop-assistants there know only the personal pronoun 'tu'. They've never heard of 'Lei' (members who only know English can't understand the problem. But you and I can.) I don't go there anymore because I refuse to be addressed with 'tu' by youngsters who could be my grandchildren. If that is old-fashioned, so be it.

@MALUSE I do the same, I cannot stand that someone, who is not my friend and I do not know, addresses to me with "tu".

I would say until 11:30ish. At 12 noon, I'd greet you 'good afternoon' already.

Well, considering that English isn't our native language, we were taught back in elementary school that we should say good morning until 11:59am because 12nn we say good noon and a minute past that we say good afternoon.

@thedevilinme All the time from the time I wake up at 6 or 7am until the afternoon when I meet the people working for me. We are in the sunshine industry and we greet each other good morning all the time. Good afternoon doesn't exist.

I remember the British rule, after noon you have to say "good afternoon". In my native country (Italy) good morning is until 1 pm. From 1 pm up to 5 pm is good afternoon and then good evening. We do not say Ciao that is only confidential and very rude if said to someone you do not know.

To be honest, I haven't heard 'Buon pomeriggio' in Italy. It's 'Buona sera' after noon which always amuses me.

I would say good morning until noon then after that I would say good afternoon. I usually just say hello so that makes it all easier anyway
