Before emoticons, there were these cool stamper markers!
As a tween/teen I had a lot of pen pals. And by this I mean the kind you would literally take a pen and some paper (sometimes fancy paper called stationery) and physically write a letter, and mail it.
Of course part of the fun was decorating your letters with stickers, stampers and the like.
I was thinking about this set of markers I had. They were the size of markers and would leave imprints in the form of - hearts, kissy lips, 4 leaf clover, feet, dog paws, lightning bolts, and, of course - smile faces.
And it dawned on me, these were the emoticons pre-emoticon days.

@FayeHazel writing letters using no pen and only the alphabet stamp markers took an eternity but was fun.

There are of course pros and cons to today's technology but I admit the way it was used to be in the past, as for communication was a lot better more personal feeling
