Is Auto-correct your Worst Enemy?

I often write on my phone. It has auto-correct which turns the article or post into a nightmare at times. It often divides words into nonsense syllables. Sometimes, it is just malicious and makes mistakes that make you look bad in print. My worst example is that I was writing about the vagaries of the internet. Vagaries mean a sudden or unexplainable change. That is exactly what happened so suddenly I was writing about the vaginas of the internet. Has auto-correct ever ruined your writing? Do you laugh about it or get mad. I think this was funny now but did not then.

As I write in three different languages I have turned off this feature, it was a pain.

That must really confuse auto-correct. They can't get it right in one language.

Autocorrect has caused me to send some accidentally naughty messages on occasion.

Did that turn out to be a good thing or a bad thing?

@spiderdust Awkward can be funny or bad. It depends on who you send it to.

Jo Ann Yes, it did screw a few of my sentences and I was glad to have spotted them and corrected the auto-correct!

@akalinus Strange correction but it does do things like that at times.

I'm glad you caught them. It is so much worse when you don't notice them until after they are sent. Last night, I was talking to someone about ibises. They are large white birds that you find along the Nile River. We have a bunch here in Florida. I posted a photo of them running down our street. The autocorrect kept turning ibises into noises.

@1hopefulman But it is not really a correction, I said what I meant. They wanted to change it to the wrong thing.

I don't have a mobile and have it turned off on my computer. I can make enough mistakes of my very own, thank you very much!

I don't know how to do that. I did on the laptop but not the phone. I am writing a lot more on the phone and it is making me crazy.

Believe it or not, I got my first "smart" phone a couple of months ago (under duress; my old phone was dying). The auto correct/predictive text drives me crazy! It takes at least twice as long to text something than it used to because I have to keep going back and trying to convince it that I meant what I wrote. I can make enough goofy mistakes on my own.

I have a bittersweet feeling towards it. There are times I'm lazy and don't want to type well, so it corrects my typos and I'm very very grateful for that. The other times, it messes up the words, and I get kind of frustrated. I don't recall awkward situations, because I'm lucky the context helps others realize I didn't mean one word but another. I remember @EddieHands and his Kyoto instead of myLot. Thanks for teaching me a new word, "vagaries", but I'm not sure I'll ever use it, sounds risky!

That really is funny. It happened to me and I disabled that feature...can't remember how I did it, though. It wrote a really nasty sentence in a text and thank goodness I saw it and didn't accidentally send it to my supervisor, of all people. We figured out that I had just used the mic to send my boss a text and didn't turn the mic off. It overheard us talking and typed that sentence. I've never uttered such language in my life!

@akalinus Oh, how awful that would have been! Another reason I disabled auto correct and suggestions was because I was forgetting how to spell!

I always wonder if it is programmed to substitute certain words. I know that sounds like a conspiracy theory but I can't help but wonder.

Auto correct can be funny.. but it is eeeevil... Every time my friend in chat says Casey to me it changes it to Casey Anthony lol.. she gets sooooo mad lol.. i laughed but it eeevil lol... i kept typing one day every time i typed a it would put in another chatters a name and people thought it was dissing him when i was talking about my naughty feral cat lol... nothing like typing Hello to someone and it keeps changing it to Hell boom banned from another chat lol... malfunctioning piece of scrap auto correct lol... but one person i know said.. to someone else come here i want to test your hunting skills, and it auto corrected it to come on i want to test your homosexuality skills lol... the one sending it screamed.. was mortified lol .... "how i delete this! ... how do i delete this!" "it put this in" lol... i wonder how many heart attacks a year are caused by auto correct.. but gotta admit some of the screen shots of that go around are funny... but to the person posting or receiving it is not always that funny

@dnatureofdtrain They are programmed by people. People aren't perfect so the programs have flaws.
