Favorite "Life" Songs #5 - "Life Takes a Life"

While I am celebrating life with this countdown of songs with "life" in the title, #5 really can't be considered a "celebration," yet it's one of the more poignant tunes in the series: "Life Takes a Life" by Jon Butcher Axis. "Being black and playing a Stratocaster created certain inevitable comparisons..." said guitarist/vocalist Jon Butcher about being saddled with the dreaded "next Hendrix" declaration early in his career (it probably didn't help that he called his band, a trio, "Axis.") For the record, according to Wikipedia, Jon Butcher has named his influences as Ritchie Havens, John Lennon, Phil Lynott, Bob Dylan, and Taj Mahal (you'll note the absence of Jimi Hendrix from that list, but now you know a little about one of my favorite guitarist's, without me telling the J. Geils Band story again.) From the 1983 debut, Jon Butcher Axis, "Life Takes a Life" is a tune that still holds true all these decades later (perhaps even more so. Mass shootings weren't a way of life in the early 80's. Now? We're both schocked and relieved on days that they don't happen.) The song was the debut single for the band, reaching #26 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. I've linked to the official video, which depicts gun violence without actually depicting gun violence. Some things never seem to change. (There's no way out info verified by Wikipedia)
From there 1983 self titled debut album Jon Butcher Axis here is the music video for Life Takes A Life

@scarlet_woman - Ah. I understand. I missed out on a lot of good bands here for that reason.

Nice! Sounds good dude! It's funny, I never really used to like too much 80's music for the most part, but think I am coming around and liking more and more of it these days

@teamfreak16 Makes sense man! Haha, hope I don't make you feel old, but I know my dad and you are around the same age, if I remember how old you are correctly.. So I wouldn't doubt it if he knows these guys. Growing up, I got in to most of the music I am in to, from my dad, and I'm so grateful for it

@mawdest - I'm 53. I don't like it, but I'm glad I went through the 80's when I did. It was a blast.

@teamfreak16 He is not one of those that hear very much of over here as of course they promote their own groups first on the Radio and the Television.

@lovinangelsinstead21 - He was successful in the 80's, but wasn't wildly popular at the same time.

I have not heard of this one, pretty good stuff. Very true how the wrong things never change, but good things most always seem to change or get outdated. Crazy world we live in.

@teamfreak16 I love Holy wars so much better than violent wars. I make bad jokes. I like it someone said rage in the 80's and nice funky sound on that one.

True. This one by him still rings true as well.
From their 1987 album 'Wishes'. This song was my introduction to Jon Butcher, and it must have taken me all of about an hour to get off my ass after seeing i...

Shuggie Otis, who wrote and originally did "Strawberry Letter 23," also got slapped with that "next Hendrix" label. Terrible thing to do to anyone. They've done that a lot to songwriters, too, hailing them "the next Dylan." As for the song, as George Santayana famously said, he who cannot learn from the past is condemned to repeat it. I remember this song, and you're right, it's more true now than ever.

I hate it when they do that. It's just setting someone up for failure, or at least disappointment.

@teamfreak16 — and 99% of the time the person getting the comparison bears no resemblance to the legend they’re being compared to. Seriously, STEVE FORBERT “the next Dylan”? On what planet?
