Yesterday was Full of Photos and Books

Just a Fraction of the Books I Need to Sort Through

Yesterday my projects were tripping over each other. I started the book project in the morning. As you know, I'm trying to get rid of the books I no longer need or want. The problem is that I have two houses and a shed full of them. Most were purchased for resale, but my physical condition added to a big change in education publishing recently made my thousands of dollars worth of inventory almost worthless to my biggest customers -- schools! The problem? How to get those books off my inventory and to new homes. I hate throwing them in the trash when I know there are some homeschoolers who could use them. Most are Preschool - high school texts and workbooks in new condition and lots of new and used children's literature, in and out of print. I want my house back. I want to fill it with visitors -- not books. So yesterday I started sorting the books on my bedroom shelves. I was on my feet almost all day rearranging, boxing, and rearranging what I want to keep for now. What you see in the photo is part of one room full in one room of mostly merchandise stored in the Templeton house. There is twice as much more in the part of the room you can't see. My living room here is also full of books. We had to move them from the bedrooms when we started to live here. Until then we'd kept them in the bedrooms so we could have people over and entertain here. So yesterday I worked at least five hours on my feet with the books. When I got so tired I had to sit, I pulled some soup from the freezer and ate it in front of the TV. Then I went back to transferring photos from my iMac to my PC via Dropbox, a project I'd started the day before. I'd forgotten how to do that, so I learned again by trial and error and I also transferred some with a thumb drive. I want to use photos from both computers in some of my Virily posts. I fell in love with some of my photos I hadn't seen in years. You'll be seeing some of those in future posts. I love the way photos bring back memories of things we've forgotten. It is a bit overwhelming to see all these books and know that most of them have to go. It would be so easy if I had something like a chute the library uses where people drop their books through a slot to return them. I could just drop the books I don't want in the slot and instead of filling the container, the books would magically disappear. I can dream, can't I? But I have to list every book that I give away with its value before donating it or selling it to prove to the government that I got rid of them and that I did not profit by the books I have no record of selling. Is there some undone task that's hanging over your head and always nagging at you to finish it? Note: My books weren't always stored in such a haphazard way as you see them here. My husband decided to replace some flooring when I wasn't around and had the workman just move the books and other things in the room around. The job of even getting to all the boxes -- especially the ones you can't see -- is totally overwhelming, since the workman just stacked everything in a small area and got of all the organization I had used.

I'm emptying our properties of possessions of two mothers, most of which are already gone. I only kept what I thought I'd need.

@bagarad The second husband of my mother-in-law is still alive, we only have to empty the apartment of my mother.

That's a lot of books! I actually have a lot of children's books stacked everywhere . . . not necessarily because of my children, but I love them too and literally want to keep them all. But we can't, we just can't. I've been wanting to go through them and get a shelf (or two, or three) just for them - but - we never get around to it. I wish we had a shed like you do to store them in in the meantime.

@much2say You'd be surprised how fast you can fill them up and still need more room.

Oh my gosh thousands of dollars down the drain on those books What were the changes in publishing that effects you so much? That is a lot of working writing down all the ones you donate. Maybe after that is done you can post online on Facebook if you use it to the local group and see if any homeschooling parent could use them.

I have some listed on the FB Buy/Sell groups for my area, but I don't want to get back into shipping if I can help it. I used to sell to schools who bought large quantities at once, but all that work for people buying things at almost my cost just one or two books at a time is hardly worth all the trouble.

@shaggin It hardly seems worth the effort to try to sell them, but I can't see throwing away something I know people could use.

Maybe you could try and sell some of the books on Ebay. Also, some libraries may take some of your books. Our public library, each year, has a day where people can donate books. That day is coming up here soon.

I Have already given many boxes of books to local libraries and thrift shops, and I'm not currently set up with space to ship books out on eBay. I have enough books here to stock an entire teacher resource store or children's bookstore. No one charity or library here would be able to use all I have.

That's a huge job. I like your dream. I hope it won't take too long to get it all organized and ready to give away or sell.

@bagarad Barbara, you need help with decluttering. How about a yard sale and selling the books online?

The books are left over inventory from an online bookstore. I quit because shipping is just too hard on me now. Yard sales aren't a good market for the inventory I have. I've done them many times before, but it takes a large turnout and good weather to make them successful. Neither is predictable.

@Hannihar Exactly. I guess I don't want to spend the rest of my life listing products online and shipping things out. I know I might make a few dollars, but it won't even make a dent.

@bagarad Wow, Barbara, I wish I had something to say. I have tried many ways to sell my products I have left and not sure what I can do to sell them. I have to see if can go back and and try and sell them where I did or see if someplace else I can or not sure what to do.

You are certainly faced with a great challenge. I don't know if this link might give you an idea so I am just including it in case it can be of some help.
What to do with old textbooks? Here, we cover how to donate textbooks, recycle textbooks, and even sell textbooks. You'll know exactly what to do...

Thank you for that link. I've already given books to many of those places, but I still have lots to give. Most of my educational books are workbooks or teacher resources rather than actual textbooks. Many I have in quantity.

What a task this must be. It must seem overwhelming at times. Would someone like Dolly Parton's charity take some of the children's books?

What is Dolly Parton's charity? I've been giving them to local charity thrift shops and libraries so far. No matter to whom they go I have to account for all the inventory.

You could try donating them but out of date textbooks are difficult to unload.

Right. They just transfer the job of getting rid of them to the thrift shops.
