We had boogers for snack at the preschool today! Would you allow your child to work with me?

I'll use a picture of my friend atop this post. She is now four (she was 3 1/2 when I took the photo), and told me today, as she was sitting in my lap, "I sometimes eat my boogers." I told her that there was a study from Scandinavia suggesting that eating boogers was healthy, but that it's not polite to do so in pubic. Our intellectual conversation continued, covering such subjects as bacteria, inoculations, and the saltiness and consistency of boogers. Later, at snack time, we had pretzels and peas. We usually make letters with our pretzels, but I noticed that the peas fit perfectly into the pretzels, and looked like snot bubbles coming from a four-year-old's nose. We have about four kids with colds right now, and all of our children have been witness to some gnarly snot bubbles recently. I announced, "Look what I have made!" One of the kids said, "It looks like a nose with a snot bubble coming out!" I said, "Exactly! I am about to eat a nose and a snot bubble!" Of course, all of the kids made noses with snot bubbles, and the pretzels and healthy peas disappeared like magic. My co-teacher wrote on the chalk board outside the classroom, "We had boogers for snack today!" Of course, she added what the boogers and noses were made of. Would you allow your 4-year-old child to work with me?

Of course. If nothing else, they'll learn some good music.

The little girl in the picture has a Grandfather who is a famous cardiologist. She and I have some pretty interesting discussions.

And yes, she's played my mandolin many times. She and her friends love to sing. She was singing parts of The Riddle Song, so I printed it out and sang it with her the other day. "How can there be a baby with no crying..." There's an interesting video of Joan Baez singing this one early in her career, playing a slightly out-of-tune guitar.

@vandana7 Not really. But I don't get that grossed out when my kids eat their boogers.

I think our diets are too healthy. I salt my boogers before I eat them.

You know I'm not normally squeamish but eating boogers really brings the bile to my mouth. Yes, children always find boogers hilarious and it seems it's a normal part of growing up as I know both my kids picked their noses .. thankfully my granddaughter finds it disgusting. However, in answer to your question .. yes I would have allowed my children to work with you

Absolutely! Why? you allow the kid to be a kid! Plus I noticed you told her it was not polite, so a few manners tossed in.

Telling a booger-eating kid never to eat boogers is like telling me never to play music. But there's a time and a place for everything.

@andriaperry Do you know when he finally stopped eating boogers, at least in public?

@TheHorse I know, I had a step nephew that ate boogers, when I asked him to stop and told him it was nasty he ate them more and faster for meanness. I told him I would never hold his hand, he busted out laughing.

Yep. I started volunteering at my friend's preschool years ago, was a sub for awhile, and work there five days a week now. It's incredibly fun. I have another "main" job as well.

I know mine would love that kind of lesson ! As long as there are tissues and sinks to wash their hands - and no smearing boogers on the walls .

@TheHorse I don't know how kids manage to create snot bubbles . . . maybe because they let it build up . It's so nice when kids can finally wipe their own snot bubbles !

Yes, we have tissues everywhere. I have one kid who always seems to have snot bubbles going. He is finally getting with the program and wiping his own nose.

This is the right way to teach kids what it's correct to do and what is not. Denying is not teaching. Being too strict is wrong, the difficulty is teaching without being gross. I still appreciate young people and adult with good manners.

@TheHorse Correct, this is also my opinion. Education means let them know what is right and what is wrong.

Little kids have to do stuff like fart, eat boogers, say "pee pee poo poo," and wrestle with each other. My job is not to suppress these behaviors. It is to let them know when it is appropriate and when it is not.

Children do that often and you did the correct thing explaining her that it is not polite but maybe you should add that is not hygienic too Yes, I would leave my kids to work with you.

Here's my "rebuttal."
It might be wise to look away now if you are eating or have a weak stomach, but scientists have discovered that ingesting bogies is good for teeth, and overall health.

@nela13 Heh heh. Well, I do suggest that they "take their booger medicine" in private. It doesn't work.
