The Horse goes into a rage. Who'd a thunk it?

Today, on a hike with a friend in Tilden Park, we encountered some incredible wildlife. I'm not talking abut the pelican that appeared to be carrying a squirrel off to dinner. I'm talking about the banana slug (or maybe he's not a real banana slug, as he isn't yellow) we encountered on the trail. What made it incredible was my intense emotional reaction to the slug. His smaller friends and relations (they look more like obese pin worms than banana slugs) have been vanquishing our snow peas at the preschool in Berkeley, and I was overcome with anger. I brutally cursed out the banana slug in our path, and my friend actually captured the moment on camera. Please don't tell anyone outside of MyLot about this. I have a reputation to defend. But I wanted to come clean about what happened.

I hope word doesn't get back to Berkeley. I'm trying to start some new corn and green beans with the kids.

@BelleStarr Well, there were no attacks at the preschool today, though I did notice that our snow peas looked even more ragged.

Well, you could have just left it alone. But I get it. Slugs don't actually bother me. Other kinds of bugs do.

Once I gave it a good talking to, including a few very choice words, I might add, I debated whether to put it on a leaf and carry to safety or just leave it there.

@TheHorse I would have carried it to safety. I have utter respect for animals/insects while they are in their natural habitat. Only when they invade mine do I give 'em a piece of my mind. :-D

In my fantasy life, I use a flamethrower on texting drivers, simply run over teenagers who intentionally walk really slowly in crosswalks, and salt all slugs. But in real life...

I think you could call that righteous anger. No one would fault you for it, in light of what the slug did to your plants at the preschool.

@TheHorse Don't tell anyone but my Mum and I once caught a very big caterpillar and we didn't tread on it for the reasons you say. We put it in a cup till it lost some weight - then we disposed of it. Writing about it, I can't quite believe we did that! Don't let Vanny read this.

Poor slugs. Well, it happens you want to protect your snow peas and they want to eat. Take the time to sing this song maybe it will ease the stress,

Dunno - that doesn't look like a member of the Ariolimax family... There's a living to be made out of studying these guys, especially the wonder-slug, Limax pseudoflavus:

@TheHorse It's not too bad. The main problem is keeping ahead - as the slug climbs up the wall during the day, it slides back down a ways overnight whilst it sleeps...

Are banana slugs a nuisance pest in your neck of the woods? My buddy, who lives in the San Jose area, always posts photos of them when he and his girlfriend go hiking. They're always keeping count of how many banana slugs they find.

@TheHorse Is there any specific type of plant or tree that the banana slugs munch on the most?

I thin they're kind of cool. And they're fun to see when you're off hiking. But slugs and snails in general are hard on plants.

A crow fly passed me while driving, he had a rat and he dropped it in a field, I am sure he came back after I drove on. Morton salt and all your problems are solved, or any brand will work,

If its out in the wild I leave it alone - if its in my back yard I toss it over to the neighbors but if it starts to party in my veggie plants it gets a large dose of pool salt.
