Swapping instead of selling at our garage sale

My sister is exactly eight years older than me and we’ve always been mad about horses. We grew up on a farm and our father bred stock-horses and in particular coloured horses and ponies. We rode almost every day of our lives. We would muster sheep and cattle on horseback and we also had a draught horse which used to pull a cart for certain tasks.
Move forward sixty years or so and my sister is selling her house. We decided to have a combined garage sale. We both have a lot of horse-related items and spent the last hour before the sale swapping books, DVDs, pictures and ornaments. I think Vince thought we’d be taking just as much stuff back home as we had brought but commonsense prevailed and in the end we were all pleased with how much we’d sold. Pictured is just a small portion of what we were offering. I forgot to take any photos early on.

I grew up with horses too. The farmer next door liked me ride his horses. I loved it too, my grandparents had horses and as a teen I had a Morgan mare. When I went to college my sister took over the horse and when she went to college my dad sold it back to the original owner,.
Haven't been on a horse in at least 35 or 40 years..

It was great fun wasn't it? There aren't many Morgans in Australia although I know there was one on an endurance ride that we volunteered at. They have a great reputation. I always loved driving the draught horse too and later Vin and I had driving ponies. I'll attach a photo.

@JudyEv Now that I think about it, when we moved to the country a neighbor farmer used his horses too. in the winter he would show up with his horses pulling a sled. he gave all the kids in the are rides on the sled. I have a photo of that, I will have to look for it.

@PainsOnSlate My father was one of the last to use working horses as in ploughing etc. We always did the stock work on horseback.

@JudyEv That's wonderful!! You know what they say one person's trash is another's treasure. I am sure you didn't consider them trash though, you just are downsizing and things need to have a home.

@JudyEv Anytime I ever had a garage sale, whatever was leftover was donated to charity. I certainly didn't want to haul anything back home afterward!

Nobody wanted them! I'm now going to put two of them on the wall in a bedroom. I bought them in Reading in England and I've never even hung them up. My sister had the right attitude. For any treasures that didn't sell, she would say 'oh well, it must mean I'm meant to keep it'.

Sounds like you both got some great bargains at your own sale and didn't have to spend any money! Good deal!
