This is Athelstan - Athy for short - who has just joined us. Agreed, this is not a particularly good photo - hand-held on a long lens in a dark corner, and I didn't want to scare him any more by using flash. With a bit of luck I'll be able to take some better ones when he gets a bit more used to us. Athy is a blue-point Siamese who is 16 weeks old. We drove up to Leeds (from Leicestershire) yesterday and he was in his box on the back seat of the car with me on the way back - complaining at times but at least not continuously! He is very nervous and reluctant to make friends with us yet - but I'm sure that this will change before long!

the picture is fine. i'm sure he'll feel at home and warm up to you as the days go by. is he going to be an indoor or outdoor cat?

We tend not to have that distinction in the UK - most people allow their cats to go where they like, and ours will certainly be allowed out through the cat-flap when he's ready.

@hereandthere There is a set of storage trays in a metal frame in our lobby area by the back door. He managed to squeeze behind these when he was first released from his travelling box and my wife took out the bottom tray and made a bed for him in the space. He has spent more time there than anywhere else so far - and that is where I took the photo. However, we hope that this is temporary - the tray we removed now has nowhere to go!

awww, I love Meezers! I drove to San Antonio to get Tony back on New Years Day 2008. He complained pretty continually from south-eastern San Antonio to San Marcos, about 45 to 50 minutes.

@indexer Tony isn't Siamese, but he was loud. I drove from Houston to Austin, 3 hours, with 3 Siamese back in 1998. I had gotten tranquilizers for them, but Scamp still stressed and cried for over an hour and then off and on after that. The picture is of Tony.

Our previous cat was terrible in a car - constant yowling all the way! Since bringing him home, Athy had two very bad nights - my wife stayed up with him for an hour on the first night and I did the same on the second - but since then he has let us sleep right through!

What a cutie. He will be a joy to be around, I'm sure.
